Excerpt from Little People: 10 Famous Composers
Ludwig Van Beethoven
1770 – 1827
Beethoven has earned the distinction of being one of the world’s most popular composers, while being deaf. Although Beethoven said his deafness was because of an argument with a singer, he suffered from tinnitus which made his hearing worse.
Nevertheless, he went on to compose some of the world’s best loved songs, including ‘Ode to Joy’, (the Ninth Symphony, the Choral Symphony). This was later adopted by the EU as their anthem.
While Beethoven’s deafness did not stop him from composing as he used the vibrations from his piano, and he knew enough about the science of music to compose pleasing tunes and hear it in his head, it did make live performances almost impossible. This was a problem because it was an important source of income for the composer. Eventually, when his music began to get more popular, his income came from publishing his compositions and from people who believed enough in his work to give him money.
Beethoven was deaf, but that did not stop him from making great music. He wrote ‘Ode to Joy’, and a lot of piano music.

Guest Post by the Author of Little People: 10 Famous Composers
Convince us why your book is a must-read.
Thank you for hosting me on this blog tour! This is the blog post I found hardest to write – why is my book a must-read? Each book I write has a personal story – this book was written for my sisters as a Christmas present – and I always find it difficult to explain to others why they should read my books. So let’s do what I always do if I’m stuck: let’s brainstorm!
It’s educational
Children and adults will surely learn something from this book, just as I learned new facts while I was researching! Not to mention encouraging your child to have a respect and love of music. Who knows? They could be the next Mozart – a true child genius – or they could soon be battling with Beethoven for the most loved composer award! I’ve heard some spectacular compositions by children as they emulate and develop familiar music, and then progress into more of their own style. This book could set them on the right track for finding their musical talent!
It’s readable
It’s not a book with reams of stuffy writing. Each composer only has a page of facts, and they’re written in a fun and educational way. Who says learning can’t be fun! As well as the paragraphs of information, some facts are rewritten in easier language for children who are just beginning to read alone.
It’s fun!
Each of the ten composers have their portrait in the “Little People” style of oversized head! It will get you and the kids giggling while you flick through the pages. “Famous Composers” is sure to appeal to adults and children alike, to anyone with an interest in historical people, or in music.
But of course I’m going to say all of these things! It’s my book. So don’t just take my word for it. As part of this blog tour, I’m giving out review copies. Check out some of the reviews on different blogs in the “Famous Composers” blog tour. Perhaps they’ll persuade you!
While we continue to upload “Famous Composers” to Amazon, the paperback is available from the Crowvus shop: www.crowvus.com/shop
