About Craig Herdern
Craig Herdern is a British novelist, author of the MDS book series of which Palimpsest is his first novel. He lives in England with his wife and his Italian sports car, spending his days writing and drinking coffee.

Author Interview:
What inspired you to write in this genre?
I had no particular genre in mind when I wrote the prologue for Palimpsest on my one and only iPhone… whilst sitting in a coffee shop, indulging my weakness for expresso. The initial idea was just to create the blank canvas; I had no idea where the story would go. It soon became clear that I couldn’t write the whole story on a mobile – I needed a PC – I had lost the work one when I was laid off. As regards genres, I admit that I do have a fondness for Sci-Fi, but I prefer it when that aspect is secondary to the story and characters involved. What made them who they are – why they do what they do – not restricted by any set genre. I jump between them.
If an author fictionalized your life, in which genre would the story belong?
Horror… seriously though, this is actually how I started writing. The company I worked for had lost the contract…work had dried up…and redundancy was looming. I was bored, had time on my hands, and decided to write about my early years. Yes, perhaps horror… When I was five, in East Dulwich in 1963, Victorian terraced houses worth over a million were in short supply, but there was plenty of the white stuff that fell out of the sky. Not so much of the latter now. I started school that year and looking back now, it was like something that Dickens would have created. A daunting old schoolhouse, with classrooms full of vintage old oak single desks, and a hole for an ink well, with no ink. It was unnecessary anyway – there were no pens or paper – just little blackboards, a single piece of chalk, and a dirty rag to wipe it with. Not exactly child friendly. I was scared shitless.
Do you have a set writing schedule?
No. There is a reason for this. For me, writing is like entering my personal time machine – i.e., as soon as I start, my sense of time abandons me, and hours just pass. Worse, my coffee will have gone cold. I have to choose wisely.
Do you need silence to write, or can you work in any environment?
I can switch off to what’s around me, but it’s nice to have some music on. Saying that getting out the house is good – zipping to the nearest Nero’s or Costa
What is your favorite type of music?
That’s a big list…but rock, jazz, R&B. Latin and various classical.
Do you have a hobby you would like to share with us?
Play the piano to relax – and sax occasionally. And, of course, the car
What do you read for pleasure?
Nowadays, apart from writing, I prefer to watch good drama in any genre.
Do you have a favorite snack or beverage while you are writing?
Not when I am writing – but when I am taking five – it’s got be an espresso
Who has influenced your writing the most?
As regards novelists, it’s Julian May, H.G Wells, and the wonderful Michael Coney. I also admit to being inspired by good film and TV drama of any genre. In addition, I must also mention my wife and best friend, who is always the first reviewer, and best mate Chris, who calls it as he sees it – and doesn’t mince his words.
Is there anything you would like my readers to know about you and your book?
I always wanted to write, or pursue a music career, but was never encouraged or supported to do so when I was younger, and before I knew it, I was too busy supporting my own family with the 9 to 5 job. It was never just 9 to 5.
The closest I got to writing at that time, was when I made stories up for my daughter at bedtime. The light in her room was poor, and I haven’t got the greatest eyesight, so making up stories – rather than reading – was the far easiest option. The chance, when it came, came late and was unexpected. As I mentioned at the beginning, I wrote the prologue over a coffee, on my mobile, but I didn’t mention that it was because I was feeling a bit low because I had just broken my finger (a story for another time) and so there wasn’t much point in buying that new keyboard I wanted.
Palimpsest, and now Winter, are the first two books in the MDS series. There will be more, but my current WIP is the first in a different series – the Caretaker Chronicles – which is scheduled for release next year. It will appeal to those with an interest in alien intervention, but with a twist.
