Asira is a member of a high-ranking family of Alchemists who exert control over the libraries that store magical texts. She never believed her acceptance into the coveted position was in doubt. Yet, when she becomes the apprentice of a gargoyle shifter Alchemist who insists on keeping his pet bird with him, she has her doubts that he was the right choice for her final class.

Jaydon is from a shifter group known as the Gigun. As an unconventional but powerful teacher of transmutation at the university, he could have his pick of mentees. It isn't hard to tell that the last thing he wants to do is mentor a student from a powerful family.

Asira finds Jaydon frustrating but too fascinating for her own good. But she needs his knowledge and guidance when she becomes the target of a classmate’s deception. With Jaydon’s assistance, the two of them uncover a conspiracy that threatens the well-regulated order of the Floating World.

As their feelings for each other intensify, Jaydon must make a life-altering decision which will either bind them together… or permanently force them apart.

Excerpt from Metamorphosis

On the Floating World when two Alchemists fall in love it can be…complicated.

Asira is a member of a high-ranking family of Alchemists who exert control over the libraries that store magical texts. Jaydon, an unconventional but powerful teacher of transmutation at the university, is from a gargoyle shifter group known as the Gigun.

Asira finds Jaydon frustrating and too fascinating for her own good. But she desperately needs his help when she becomes the target of a classmate’s dangerous use of forbidden magic. With Jaydon’s assistance, the two of them uncover a conspiracy that threatens the well-ordered world of the Alchemists.

Struggling with his growing attraction to her, Jaydon is called on to use his knowledge of the magical Books of Fire to determine Asira’s fate. And depending on what secrets the books reveal, he may be forced to make a life-altering decision that will either bind them together… or permanently force them apart.

My thoughts on Metamorphosis

Metamorphosis: Worlds of Fire by Deborah A. Bailey is book two of the series, but is readable as a stand-alone.

The author has set up a fantastic duo in Asira and Jaydon. She’s from a powerful family of alchemists and he is a member of the Gargoyle shifters and an expert on transmutation.

When a conspiracy arises, they must work together to save the sacred manuscripts. However, the heat between them rises the longer they are together.

There are many different creatures and characters in this story. The author does a good job of defining each character and species. The world-building process is handled well without info dumps, making the story easy and fast to read.

I enjoyed the differences between the Floating World and Jaydon’s Granjai. The author’s descriptive prose brings both worlds vividly to life.

I don’t want to give anything away about the storyline. It’s best experienced without bias, but I think you’ll enjoy it.

The book is perfect for all lovers of romantic fantasy, shifters, and slow-heat between characters.

I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

My Ideas for the Worlds of Fire Series

I decided to write this series because I had a lot of ideas but nowhere to put them. What I mean is that I wanted to write about a portal that connected alternate Earths. Each world would have a slight difference yet be similar to our Earth. But as I began to write down my ideas, I realized I didn’t want to stick with that plan. I wanted the portals to be powered by magic instead of science.

The portals are created by the phoenix shifters when they regenerate. Though no one knows exactly how that happens or why, that power makes them very important. Because of their mysterious powers, the Alchemists covet their secrets. Even though they have universities and libraries filled with magical texts, the Alchemists have no control over the portals. This is why Jaydon (the hero in Metamorphosis) is so respected (and envied). He can read the magical Books of Fire, which are texts that hold secrets about the portals.

In book one, Blood Red Moon, a lot of the action happens on two alternate Earths. It goes into more background about the phoenix shifters and their protectors, the Night Forces. There is overlap between the books, but they are both stand-alones. In fact, I wanted all of the books to be able to be read independently. With each book there is more information about the portals, but they also will feature different worlds. Some are alternate Earth worlds while others are completely different. There are also shifters, vampires, cyborgs, and all kinds of characters.

Writing this series gives me a chance to create different worlds while still connecting them (and the characters). And of course, there will always be a romance, an adventure, and a bit of magic.
