I, Ximena Mangual, lucked out

Internet and media trolls are right about my lack of background and training. I didn’t go to Julliard, no summers at acting camp, neither one of my parents were classically trained thespians. I just fell into it. Tropece, actually. Dumb fucking luck’s what helped me grasp celebrity status. All thanks to my beautiful boy, the center, anchor, of my life.

After the divorce, eran dudas constante. Whether I’d made the right decision uprooting us to Miami. Whoever honestly believes Puerto Rico is seen, considered, or treated as part of the U.S. is severely deluded. I worried Sandy’d have trouble acostumbrandose and rebel. Sandy, siendo Sandy, adapted like a chameleon. And if he didn’t, I never heard about it. He complained less than me.

I always made it a point to be home when he arrived from school. Mientras que yo cocinaba, el se sentaba en la sala a terminar su homework with the TV perennially white-noising Caso Cerrado, a trash tabloid-reality show featuring a supposed former judge who now presided over a Spanish-language courtroom; half Jerry Springer, half People’s Court. Over the end credits, a bassheavy male voice encouraged viewers to phone in and be part of the studio audience.
