My thoughts on War at the Ice Cream Store 2

🍨 Children's Picture Book | Ages 3-8 | Rhyming, Humor, Friendship

Get your spoons ready-things are about to get messy in the best possible way! Cheryl Daveiga is back with War at the Ice Cream Store 2: Rocky Road vs The Sundae Storm, and this time, the freezer aisle may never be the same.

This follow-up to the original War at the Ice Cream Store brings back the playful chaos, clever rhymes, and deliciously illustrated dessert drama that young readers (and their grown-ups) loved. But now, a bold new flavor rolls into town-Rocky Road-and he's stirring up a Sundae Storm of epic proportions. Sprinkles fly and tempers churn as the story blends silliness with subtle lessons in teamwork, leadership, and embracing differences.

The rhyming is on point, perfect for read-aloud fun, with just enough tongue-twisting challenge to keep it entertaining. Illustrator Nate Fakes serves up a batch of bright, expressive artwork that will have kids poring over every page, spotting hidden details and silly side characters.

I love how this book leans into joyful chaos without ever losing its heart. Beneath the whipped cream warfare and fudge flurries, there's a clear message: even the boldest flavors can find a way to work together. It's teamwork by way of toffee bits and sugar cones.

If you're looking for a read that's equal parts giggles and gooey delight, this book hits the sweet spot. It will make a great addition to any home or classroom library. You probably shouldn't read this if you don't have ice cream in the freezer, as you'll likely need to make an ice cream store run!

Rating: 5 out of 5 scoops 🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦
Perfect for fans of food-themed fun, rhyming reads, and big-hearted stories with a side of sprinkles.

I've included a few discussion questions below to get you started, but you might just read it over and over for plain old fun.

🍦 War at the Ice Cream Store 2

Classroom or Read-Aloud Discussion Guide
For Ages 3-8

 Let's Talk About It!
After reading the story, ask your young readers:

  1. Who is Rocky Road?
What makes him different from the other ice cream characters? Do you think he wanted to start trouble, or was it an accident?

  2. What is a Sundae Storm?
Why do you think it happened? How did the characters respond to the chaos?

  3. Did the characters learn to work together?
What helped them stop fighting and start listening?

  4. What would you do?
Imagine you're one of the ice cream treats-what would your flavor be, and how would you help calm the Sundae Storm?

  5. What is the message of the story?
Is there a lesson about friendship, teamwork, or getting along with others who are different from us?

🖍️ Activity Prompt:
Draw your own dessert character!

  • Give it a name and personality.

  • What kind of dessert is it?

  • Is it shy, silly, brave, or mischievous?

  • Bonus: Write a short rhyme about your treat!

I purchased a copy of the book. This review represents my honest and unbiased opinion.

I also reviewed War at the Ice Cream Store 1: Mustachio Pistachio vs Bully Vanilli. The Collector's Edition of this book is included in the raffle for this review.

Another favorite children's rhyming picture book from Cheryl DaVeiga is The Dolphin Dentist: No Sharks Allowed.  I need to re-read this before every dental appointment!

Guest Post from the author of War at the Ice Cream Store 2

OH, GET OVER IT! By Cheryl DaVeiga

What Book Reviews Taught Me About Bravery and Connection

Who cares?
I'd love to tell you I send my books into the world like happy little balloons-free, floating, unattached. But if I'm honest? I'm still holding the string.

A glowing 5-star review makes me want to dance around the kitchen. Someone else loves my story, baby! But a 1-star rating with no comment? That one lingers and loops. And my brain? Oh, it knows just how to crank up the volume on that one lonely star until it drowns out the rest.

Yeah, It's Personal
When you make something-a story, a song, a silly ice cream war-you're not just creating content. You're putting yourself on the page. Your quirks, your voice, your wacky self (ok maybe that's just me.) So, when someone dismisses it with a single star, how can it not sting?
Especially for someone like me, who spent years feeling uncomfortable putting myself out there. Rejection wasn't just a fear-it was the reason I stayed silent.

The Strange Power of Stars
We're wired to want approval. One kind review can light up the sky. But one critical one? It sticks like gum to your shoe. The brain loves to replay it, obsess over it, give it the megaphone.
But here's what seven books and multitudes of songs are teaching me. I'm learning: Being seen doesn't always mean being liked. And the price of connection is often vulnerability.

Sometimes, a low rating is just a mismatch. Someone didn't connect with it-and that's okay. Art that tries to please everyone ends up being vanilla (and not the good kind).
Other times, that critique holds a gem-a moment that missed the mark-a place I can grow. Yes, it stings, but if I let it, it can sharpen me.

Do I Really Want All 5-Stars?
Once upon a time, I did. Now? Not so much. Funny, my lowest-rated book is my bestseller.

If every review glows, maybe it means people are just being nice. Or maybe I haven't taken big enough swings. Haven't stirred the pot. Haven't reached far enough to really connect.

Because real connection often means taking risks-and not everyone will applaud.

Why I Keep Writing
In the end, it's not about being universally loved. It's about reaching someone-that one kid who wants to read because of my goofy jokes. The one kid who gave me "infinity stars" in a video - yeah, that happened, and I did my kitchen dance. (Did you catch that? I wrote gave me. Ha, I really meant gave my book.)

That's the magic. That's the win.

So yeah, the 1-stars might still sting. But stars don't define my worth. They don't erase the 5s- or the quiet, thoughtful reviews from people who just felt something.

This journey is messy and emotional…because it matters.

And I'll keep showing up. String in hand, heart wide open. Someone might have to remind me of this blog as I release new books.
