The Lights of Shantinagar is a warm and lively portrait of family life set in modern India where new philosophies are reshaping old traditions and one woman’s astute observations can change everything.

Aspiring quantum physicist Sumi is newly married and has moved into her husband’s family home. Here she observes that the beguilingly tranquil middle-class town of Shantinagar is not very different from her beloved quantum world: the happenings in one house are cryptically entangled with things next door, objects mysteriously disappear and unexpected interactions reveal surprising truths.

As the line between right and wrong begins to blur, new discoveries force the residents of Shantinagar to reflect on what they truly know about themselves and the ones they love. Meanwhile, Sumi must blend logic with love to make sense of her new circumstances.

My thoughts on The Lights of Shantinagar

The Lights of Shantinagar presents a modern Indian neighborhood where lives exist in an interconnected web that mirrors the complex nature of quantum physics. Sumi experiences how the energy from one house creates ripples that affect neighboring homes, and how minimal changes produce unexpected outcomes, and how silence can be more powerful than spoken words. The story presents a refined and meaningful exploration of human connections.

Nidhi Arora opens a window into the rhythms of Indian family life, offering comfort to readers who know it well and gentle insight to those discovering it for the first time. The book presented authentic portrayals of family expectations alongside communal living arrangements and the implicit rules that govern love and duty.

This isn't a fast-paced story. The novel requires readers to give it careful thought because it delivers its best insights through contemplation. It's the kind of story that deserves a spot on any bookshelf-thoughtful, layered, and quietly powerful.

I received an eARC of the book for the tour. This review represents my honest and unbiased opinion.
