Source: Goddess Fish PromotionsIn a ruined, distant future of our world, filled with rain, gloom, and danger, Squirt and her sister Dara fight to survive as part of the underground clan, hunting meat to survive and clinging to the edges of existence.
When Squirt encounters a mysterious figure above ground, her life is upended. Taken to a gleaming paradise above the clouds, she finds herself trapped in an idyllic prison, where everything seems perfect—but is danger hiding in plain sight? Does Charlotte, her enigmatic and gentle companion, hide secrets behind her perfect smile? Does Mrs Wallis, the tower's cold matriarch, watch Squirt with a predator’s patience?
Below, Dara hunts alone, trying to find meaning in her life and haunted by her sister’s disappearance while whispers of betrayal within the clan force her to choose between being a victim or fighting for her survival.
As the sisters’ paths converge, truths are exposed: immortality comes at a terrible price, and the ones they’ve trusted most may be their greatest enemies.
Above the Clouds is a haunting tale of the fight for survival and identity, asking the question: What does it truly mean to be human?
Before you dive into my review, here’s a quick taste of Tim Vee’s atmospheric writing. This short passage captures the awe and unease Squirt feels when she’s whisked from a grim, underground existence into a gleaming world high above the clouds—a place where luxury might be just another kind of trap.
📜 Excerpt from Above the Clouds
Squirt stood under the shower as piping hot water rushed over her head and body. She gasped, steadying herself on the wall as steam swirled around her. She washed herself with soap as Charlotte had instructed, and the years of grime and filth dripped from her, circling the drain and disappearing.
She stood, dried herself with a clean, soft towel, and stared at herself in the mirror. She had never seen herself before, and she looked in wonder at the face of a stranger looking back at her.
“What is happening?” she whispered to her tense, clean-looking reflection. “Where am I?”
There was a knock at the door, and she jumped.
“Are you decent?” said Charlotte through the door.
Squirt wrapped the towel around herself and turned from the mirror, suddenly aware of herself and the strange place she found herself.
“Yes,” she said, with feigned confidence.
Charlotte opened the door. She had changed and wore loose pants, a white shirt, and suede slippers.
“I will help you get ready for dinner,” she said, smiling and taking Squirt by the hand.
They were in a huge room with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out across the darkening eastern sky. There was a plush four-poster bed, and hanging on the walls, not that a girl from the Clan would know, were paintings by Picasso, Monet, Pissarro, and Van Gogh.
Charlotte led Squirt to a large vanity, where she seated her and began brushing her hair.
“You are quite pretty under all that dirt,” she said, smiling at Squirt’s bewildered reflection while gently brushing the tangles from her hair.
“What is this place?” asked Squirt.
“This is our home…” said Charlotte matter-of-factly as she walked toward a dresser, where she took out a pair of capri pants, a short-sleeved blouse, and underwear.

✨ My Thoughts on Above the Clouds ✨
Tim Vee’s Above the Clouds delivers a gripping post-apocalyptic vision that’s as unsettling as it is beautiful. The novel unfolds across three sharply distinct settings: the dark underground tunnels, where Squirt and her sister Dara fight to stay alive; the cloud-top paradise, a dazzling world of luxury and secrets; and the bleak middle ground, a desolate zone where the old and infirm are left to die.
This stark geography isn’t just a backdrop—it’s a living metaphor for power, privilege, and the uncomfortable choices we make when survival is at stake.
What I loved most was how Vee uses these settings to explore the bond between sisters. Squirt’s sudden removal to an immaculate high-rise “heaven” and Dara’s lonely hunt below create a dual narrative filled with tension. Their devotion to one another is the heartbeat of the story, and every decision they make—whether to trust, to betray, to fight—feels charged with love and sacrifice.
The writing is dark and immersive, pulling me into a world of dripping concrete and whispering betrayals one moment, and the sterile gleam of the tower the next. I could almost smell the damp underground air and feel the dizzying openness above the clouds. The pacing never lets up; every chapter raises the stakes until the final revelations about immortality and humanity hit with gut-punch force.
Above the Clouds isn’t just about survival. It asks a bigger question: what does it truly mean to be human when comfort comes at the cost of freedom? I found myself thinking about it long after I’d finished, and that, to me, is the mark of a powerful read.
