My thoughts on The Author’s AI Toolkit
The Author’s AI Toolkit by Hank Quense is a helpful, down-to-earth guide for writers looking to navigate the world of artificial intelligence without getting overwhelmed. Instead of hyping AI as a magic fix, Quense offers a balanced, practical take on how writers can use these tools to make their creative and professional lives a bit easier.
Quense covers five main areas: planning, writing, publishing, marketing, and managing your author business. Each section is filled with real examples and clear explanations. Whether you’re stuck trying to brainstorm plot ideas or you need help formatting a manuscript, there’s a good chance Quense has an AI suggestion that can help. The writing is very understandable, and the advice feels grounded in real experience rather than tech jargon.
The Author’s AI Toolkit emphasizes maintaining your voice and creative control. AI is treated as a helpful assistant, not a replacement. If you’re a writer, especially an indie author, who’s curious about using AI but not sure where to start, this book is a solid introduction.
It’s not just about saving time—it’s about working smarter without losing what makes your work yours.
On a personal note,, I’ve used Grammarly to check my work for ages. I was an early adopter of AI tools and didn’t even realize it. AI definitely polarizes many authors, writers, and bookish folks. It doesn’t have to be that way. There are many legitimate, helpful ways to use AI. Read this book and see for yourself how AI can improve your life.
I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

Interview with the author of The Author’s AI Toolkit
How did you do research for your book?
Well, this is an easy one. Since the book is about AI, I used AI for the research. I used Perplexity.AI since this is my favorite AI app.
What made you write a book about AI?
I had spent some time investigating AI and how to use it. One day, I asked it “How to develop a character?” The response was cliched, nothing I couldn’t get from a book on writing. So, I asked the AI a more detailed query: “What makes Ted Lasso a great character?” The response stunned me because it was so detailed and so full of excellent advice. That was the point where I decided to write a book on using AI so other writers and authors could take advantage of AI tools.
There are many books out there about AI. What makes yours different?
I’ve read books on AI and looked at videos on Youtube and they all have one thing in common. They use technobabble to explain AI which means only other AI experts can understand it. What makes my book different is that it’s written in plain, understandable English. Reviewers have commented about what an easy read it is.
What advice would you give budding writers?
If you’re writing fiction, know the ending of the story before you begin to write the first draft. Unless you’re a pantser. Then you can ignore my advice.
Do you have another profession besides writing?
No I don’t. Writing and writing business is all I do
How long have you been writing?
I started writing short stories since way back in the last century. Actually, that’s the last millennium.
What is your next project?
I don’t have one right now. Eventually, I’ll get bored and begin to search for a new project. I’m always looking for something weird to work on, something I haven’t done before. When the time comes, I’ll ask AI to find something for me to work on.
What genre do you write and why?
I write humorous scifi and fantasy stories Because they are fun to write. Although, I haven’t written any fiction in about five years.
I’ve been writing nonfiction during that time.
Do you snack while writing? Favorite snack?
Sometimes. When I do it’s usually pretzels or salt & vinegar potato chips
Do you write every day?
I do. Every morning right after I get up until late morning. Then another hour or two in the afternoon or evening. The evenings are always Zoom meetings
Favorite travel spot?
Barcelona. I love that city. It’s better than Paris and on par with Rome.
What’s the most courageous thing you’ve ever done?
Raised two daughters with my wife
