Be Still: Lessons from an Angel ~ Guest Post
Ed Perry was an important influence in my young professional life. We were introduced through a business engagement and he came to work with me as our CFO. He also took on a mentor role and became much like a father figure.
At first, I thought it was because of our age difference as he was older and wiser. Philosophically we were aligned on the way to do business and how to treat people. Ed would instill business practices in very subtle ways. He’d provide gentle course corrections that I took as business advice. I would come to realize it was all biblical based. Ed was my angel. Thus, the name of the book, Be Still: Lessons from an Angel.
I didn’t know the extent of Ed’s knowledge of the Bible. Given that how strong of a Christian and what an accomplished, self-taught, theologian he was, it didn’t come out in our interactions. I came to realize this later, after the business was sold and Ed began sharing his weekly Bible lessons with me.
Every week for nearly ten years, I set them aside as they arrived, thinking I was too busy and I’d get to them one day. Fast forward to 2022 when I found myself taking on a mentor role (similar to Ed with me) with a client of mine, a young successful entrepreneur that reminded me a lot of myself. One day, she asked if we could discuss my faith and Christianity. I was proud that we had created a safe space where she felt comfortable asking as this was outside of our normal scope. I told her it would be a privilege.
Her question sparked a memory of the Bible lessons from Ed! I opened a file drawer and pulled out a stack two feet high to show her in our virtual setting. I left the stack out and walked by it for a few weeks – almost fighting the urge to start reading. Then I randomly picked out a small lesson on marriage. What I read resonated. The words jumped off the pages.
Here’s what I realized: What a miss it was that it took me so long to read Ed’s writings, that I was now old enough to comprehend just how solid these lessons were, and the vast amount of work, including Greek translations, that went into these lessons that are presented in no-nonsense, plain truth. Sometimes, when we sugar-coat the truth, the message gets lost.
Going back to that conversation with my client, I knew that Ed’s lessons were what she needed as she was seeking to know more. This made me see that I was led to put Ed’s work in the hands of others who could benefit from the simple way, I believe it was meant to be shared. I didn’t know how to start and then God orchestrated an army to bring this to life. It had very little to do with me and everything to do with what I think was predestined.
I’m excited about early feedback. I plan to bring as much of Ed’s work to print as long as I’m able to do it with the hope that it will assist those who are seeking and spark questions and conversations with loved ones and strangers alike.
