Blah, Blah, Blah: A Snarky Guide to Office Lingo by Dan HillPublished by Sensory Logic on September 15, 2021
Genres: Humorous
Format: eBook, Paperback
Pages: 156
Need a laugh to get through your workday?
You’ve come to the right place. Ambrose Bierce’s classic The Devil’s Dictionary took on life in general. Now a century later, it’s time to lampoon the business world. There’s no richer target than being told to think outside the box by leaders spouting off about synergy, teamwork, and innovation while at the same time exhorting you to stay in your swim lane. If as famed business guru Peter Drucker writes, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast,” then we’ve been asked to eat a dog’s breakfast at work for far too long!
A little truth in every joke.
Join the fun as the two lead authors and 50 other contributors offer their humorous take on how the workplace really operates. With almost 600 diabolical definitions to enjoy, you're sure to find plenty to smile about.

An Interview with Dan Hill
What Does Being a Kelly Girl, Bacteria, and Being-on-Hold Have in Common? Find Out Here!
Is there a movie that best fits or parallels what this book is about?
The movie “9 to 5” starring Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin, and Jane Fonda might qualify. For one thing, I recently learned that the script was based on the “war stories” of female office workers at National City Bank when Fonda went to Cleveland to interview them. I remember working for a while as a “Kelly Girl” and getting assigned to the HQ of a retailer where I was part of an otherwise all-female typing pool while ringing the pool were glass-enclosed offices, occupied entirely by guys. Blah, Blah, Blah is a crowdsourced book, with over a dozen female contributors of witty definitions revealing the often sexist reality underlying office lingo.
What inspired you to write this book? Was there a “eureka” moment?
There was, indeed. I host a podcast called “Dan Hill’s EQ Spotlight” on the New Books Network, the world’s largest book review platform. Two weeks in a row, separate guest authors mentioned that the estimate is that about 25% of all managers are bullies. I woke up one morning after the second of these interviews and thought, “How is that possible?” That shouldn’t be tolerated. Far too many lives are being negatively impacted. So at heart Blah, Blah, Blah is a call for reform—let’s get more fair, emotionally intelligent (EQ) managers on the job!
What’s your favorite entry in Blah, Blah, Blah?
Hard to choose a favorite child, even when many of the entries are step-children in that they were provided by the book’s many contributors. I think we can all relate to (the promise of) AUTONOMY: Being micromanaged only part-time. Or to COMPANY CULTURE: Bacteria that grows when people are forced to work together. As a customer, who can’t also relate to YOUR CALL IS VERY IMPORTANT TO US: And now here in full, while you wait, is Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.
Does Blah, Blah, Blah aim more for the funny bone or the jugular vein?
There were some pointed diabolical definitions submitted for this book, whether by the various contributors, or my co-author, Howard Moskowitz, or myself. Anything purely mean-spirited I rejected, however, as it’s a book of humor. If you can’t make your point with some levity, then it didn’t belong in this book. After all, the role of humor is to bring some pleasure into a person’s day. Humor can also open us up to being receptive to new possibilities and improvements, such as in the workplace. So my ultimate goal here was to offer jokes full of surprises and meaning.
Do you have a worse-boss story of your own to tell?
I sure do. For a brief while, I worked for a woman running a public relations firm in NYC. Soon after I joined the small company I realized I was so tense I couldn’t turn off my alarm clock in the morning without facing it straight on. In other words, I couldn’t turn or bend my neck even 5 degrees one way or another. I confided my tension to a coworker, and she blithely replied: “Oh, everybody gets sick here on their second week on the job.” Did I mention that the staff’s turnover rate was above 300% annually? I quickly added to the total!
