My thoughts on Blooming Rose Blasts Off

Blooming Rose Blasts Off by Lauren Piland is the debut book in her new series, Blooming Rose.

Rose learns to face her fears, devote hard work to a project, and use critical thinking to achieve her goals.

Rose is apprehensive about creating a rocket for her school project in this book. She gets a boost of confidence from her best friend and some practical help from her father about setting goals and trial and error.

I love the guidance provided by the author, including the learning bundles, exercises, and creative activities.

Kristen Humphrey’s illustrations are a perfect complement to the story.

Blooming Rose Blasts Off will appeal to children and adults.

I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

Bookish Crafts Turn the Page

As a children’s book author, one of my fears would be that the story would end
after the last page is turned. Of course, my portion of the story must come to a
close, but I really wanted the story itself, the characters, and the lessons, to
resonate with both kids and adults long after it’s finished.

One of the ways I thought to carry on the engagement was through what I call
Beyond the Text Bundles. Not only do these bundles provide academic exercises
like reading comprehension, vocabulary building, and writing prompts to boost
any classroom lesson, but they also boast character-building activities, S.T.E.M.
group projects and take-home crafts that will hopefully keep Blooming Rose alive
and well.

Bookish crafts and activities are a way to continue conversations around
meaningful stories disguised as fun. Recalling facts, exploring situations, and
making character connections become just part of the play when building your
own rocket, thinking like an illustrator, or investigating a book-themed sensory
bucket. We also know repetition resonates, so the more we can encourage
children to become part of the story, the more likely they’ll want to read it again,
and the more they’re likely to retain key concepts from it. So as an author, what a
win-win!

So, whether you’re a classroom teacher, homeschooling hero, or summer
reading champ, there’s always a way to turn the next page on your favorite
storybook.

What do you prefer, academic bookish exercises or storybook crafts for fun?!

About Lauren Piland

Lauren Piland Author Photo

As a former second-grade and elementary art teacher, Lauren Piland is a Louisiana native turned Texas homesteader who knows the importance of engaging read-alouds both in class and at home.

After taking a step back from the classroom to raise her second child, she realized the gap some campuses face between the undersupported emotional struggles of students and the overwhelming responsibilities of teachers. “When we can use tools such as books and relatable characters to open up those more meaningful conversations, both at home and in the classroom, it aids in that process of peeling back layers of getting to know each other better and building trust,” says Piland. “Children need to feel seen, feel heard, and feel protected. And we do that by tapping into our emotions.”

Piland also wanted to further support teachers by including ready-to-use, curriculum-based exercises to go along with each book that focus on learning objectives such as reading comprehension strategies, vocabulary building, word mechanics exercises, writing prompts, whole group projects, and STEM exercises with differentiated versions for students in Pre-K all the way to fourth grade.
