Blooming Into Life by Kristie Booker is the first book review where I am personally acquainted with the author. I should clarify that to say I knew her as a child & teen. I would even babysit her occasionally when she was a tiny tot. She has grown into such a lovely young woman.

Even though I knew this is a work of fiction, I will confess to looking for similarities to people the author & I are both acquainted with in “real-life” since we come from the same hometown. What a testament to the power of her characters that I was quickly mesmerized by the storyline and rooting for Colleen with all my heart.

Blooming Into Life is the story of a small town, farm girl who marries into a wealthy, big-city family. We follow her story of trying to fit in and find her place in a world that is so foreign to her. Her struggles are ones every woman has dealt with: weight, fitness, raising a family, and acceptance. Most of all the book is about learning to love yourself.

Are you like Colleen, guilty of trying to do it all & be perfect?

Colleen is losing herself in trying to be the perfect daughter, wife, mother, and daughter-in-law. The harder she tries, the deeper into self-loathing and depression she falls. It becomes so easy to turn to wine, caffeine, and food to numb the pain. Her battle for self-acceptance and reclaiming all the things that make her unique and beautiful create a wonderful story that everyone should read.

Colleen gets help from her wellness coach, which is a valuable part of the storyline for me as it highlights that we all occasionally need help and should never be afraid to accept that help.

The following quote is from the book. We need to tell ourselves this every day.

“You are lovely, different and unique. You have a great history with lots of great stories, and because of that, you are extraordinarily beautiful.”

Although Blooming Into Life deals with the weighty topics of depression, acceptance, and a few other harsh realities of life, don’t think for a minute that it doesn’t have a great storyline with just the right amount of humor to make you chuckle as you pull for Colleen. I know I found myself laughing at some of her antics as they reminded me of myself or my daughters. The book will make you laugh, cry & self-reflect. What more could you want?

As a wellness coach, the author is uniquely qualified to tackle the subjects in this book. Kristie Booker has a refreshing writing style. I wish her all the best as she moves forward in her writing career.
