My Thoughts on Falling for a Bossy Cowboy
In “Falling for a Bossy Cowboy,” Karen Baney’s third book in the Vargas Ranch series, we focus on Derin Vargas, a sports enthusiast who steps down from his role as foreman to manage the family’s new sports complex. Derin’s blunt and bossy demeanor clashes with that of famous pro tennis player Madison Moore, who is staying at the resort for rehab after surgery. As their paths cross, Derin’s straightforward approach challenges Madison, leading to a journey of self-discovery and possibly even love.
The story involves themes of overcoming challenges and adapting to life’s changes, set against the backdrop of the Vargas brothers’ ranch life and their pursuit of love. The portrayal of the characters’ Christian faith, with the Baney brothers engaging in a Bible study group with
other men from the ranch, is a refreshing change. Through their experiences, the author explores the struggles individuals face in maintaining their faith amidst life’s trials.
For readers seeking a clean romance with solid Christian themes and attitudes, Baney’s series offers an enjoyable read. While “Falling for a Bossy Cowboy” can be enjoyed as a standalone novel, diving into the series from the beginning provides a deeper understanding of the Vargas family dynamics and enhances the overall reading experience.
I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

Guest Post from the Author of the Vargus Ranch Series
Working for Family by Karen Baney
(As told by Derin Vargas from Falling for a Bossy Cowboy)
When Dalton first suggested I take over running the brand-new Vargas Sports Complex at our family guest ranch and resort, I thought I would like it. As an avid fan of just about every sport known to man, I figured it would be fun to work with athletes recovering from potentially career-ending injuries.
I was enthusiastic about the possibilities until I had to manage everything. Then reality settled in. Taking a new job meant I would no longer be the foreman on the ranch—a job that I loved.
I worked outdoors from the time I was a teen until I was twenty-nine. Sun beating down on my back as I rode my horse, Djano, out to the cattle daily. I scouted the fence line for issues, trained green cowboys, and took in the stunning scenery of my family’s ranch.
So, stepping into the CEO role, felt about as comfortable as a rattlesnake bite. Sitting indoors all day. Staring at a computer. Trying to figure out how to make a difference in the lives of athletes. I had never played a professional sport. My only personal experience to draw on came from sports in high school. How was I gonna lead something I knew almost nothing about?
You might ask yourself why I accepted the new role to begin with. Well, I’m a Vargas. And us Vargas boys run every aspect of the guest ranch and resort. So, whether or not I wanted it, it was my destiny to run the sports complex and rehab center. When you work with family, you put aside your dreams and goals for the good of the family business. It’s just what Papi instilled in us from the day we were born.
I did not know how God was gonna stretch me—as a leader, as a man, and as a Christian. At least, He promised never to leave me, never to forsake me. ‘Cause I’m not sure I would have survived that first year on my own with all its shocking surprises and a chance at true love.
