My thoughts on Buddy the Knight
Buddy the Knight and The Queen of Sorrow by Peter David (aka Peter Hartog) is an absolute delight. It’s a thrilling and heartwarming adventure that will sweep middle-grade readers (and the young at heart) into a magical world filled with courage, friendship, and just the right amount of danger.
Buddy isn’t your typical teddy bear. He’s a Knight, created by The Nameless Wizard himself, sworn to protect his Person, 10-year-old Mieya, from all the Things-That-Go-Bump-In-The-Night. But when Mieya is cursed into a deep sleep, Buddy and his brave companions—Esteban the Bard, Sasha the Warrior-Princess, and Copper the Butterfly—embark on a perilous quest through The Realm-Under-The-Bed. From treacherous jungles to stormy deserts, they face one challenge after another, leading up to the ultimate confrontation with The Queen of Sorrow in her dark castle.
I found this story utterly charming. The Realm-Under-The-Bed is a brilliant setting that captures all the nighttime fears children battle, transforming them into an epic adventure. I especially loved the “Be” phrases sprinkled throughout—wise and empowering words that young readers can carry with them long after the last page. “Be bold. Be brave. Be wise.” “Be mindful. Be respectful. And, above all, be true.”
And The Nameless Wizard? I’d love to know more about his backstory! Here’s hoping this is just the first of many adventures with Buddy and his friends. Middle-grade readers are going to adore this one.
I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.
