My thoughts on Bunster

Bunster, an Easter Story book cover image

Christine Hwang Panzer’s children’s board book, Bunster, An Easter Story is beautifully illustrated. The delicate watercolor drawings are divine with exceptional detail.

I found the story more about friendship than Easter, so the book works well any time of year and for folks that do not celebrate this holiday.

If I read the book to my grandchildren as a series of vignettes, instead of as a continuous tale, it made a little more sense. Otherwise, it feels a bit disjointed to me. The main concept of friendship carries throughout the book, which does give it continuity. While the cursive print makes for a beautiful page, books targeted to toddlers should be in a simple print font so children can practice letter and word skills. Perhaps this is not an issue for you or the babes you might be gifting the book to, so please check it out yourself.

This board book makes a great gift for a newborn as it’s sturdy enough to handle baby book abuse and an adult or older child will be reading it.

I think rating a book like this is quite difficult as everyone is looking for something different in a book for this age group. Other than the points mentioned above, Bunster is a beautiful, giftable book. You can see my Rating Reasoning at the bottom of this post.

I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

A Note from the Author

Hi everyone!

My name is Christine.

All good book lovers probably have a library of their own. So how many bookshelves are in our house?

Asking that question is kind of dangerous for us, because my husband and I live in a 972 square foot two-bedroom condo, and we can only fit our Ikea bookshelves in the living room. We have three —

two of which hold prized board games. The other six by six black Kalex holds our books. We also have a white cabinet by the Kalex (also from Ikea), that holds Ian’s love for the RPG genre of gaming. I do not think we can possibly fit any more bookshelves in our tiny place.
We don’t know how we’re going to fit those bookshelves in a future new bigger place and not have it feel super full or slightly cluttered as it does now.

On our giant square shelf, I divided our books into Ian’s on the very left half and mine on the very right half with the two middle sections being a blend of the books we share in common and have introduced to each other and both read while we knew each other. It is fitting since our wedding portrait sits above our shelf on the wall and the Mr. and Mrs. signs from our wedding sit above our designated sections (with the fox couple sculpture I made for our wedding cake in the middle)

My section is mainly filled with kickstarted webcomics and art books as well as some choice young adult and adult fantasy series. His is the same, just different books. I tend towards the artsier and more eye-pleasing webcomics, whereas my husband loves the more cerebral stuff.

Thanks a billion to Gina for reviewing my book and allowing me to write a blog post here!

Take care, everyone!

Christine
