My thoughts on Charlie Chaloosy is Often Quite Choosy

“Charlie Chaloosy is Often Quite Choosy” by Brad Mason is a wonderful children’s book that skillfully combines a fun theme with a few life lessons, suitable for young readers. Charlie is a relatable character for children who may be hesitant to step out of their comfort zones. Told in rhyming story form, the tale relates Charlie’s adventures and the emotions he experiences along the way. The artwork’s clever use of colors and expressions captures the reader’s attention.

It’s difficult for many children to try new things. Through Charlie’s journey, readers are encouraged to embrace the excitement that comes with taking risks. (Side-note from a Nana: Within reason! I have a grandson who is too adventuresome for my liking.)

“Charlie Chaloosy is Often Quite Choosy” is well-written and well-made. It should hold up well for years in home and school libraries. The book is a valuable resource for parents and educators looking to instill a willingness to explore in young readers.

Overall, it’s a heartwarming and uplifting read that leaves a lasting impression on its audience.

I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

About Brad Mason

Brad Mason Author image

From Brad Mason:  My passion for children's literature stems from 30+ years in education and my re-entry into bedtime stories with the addition of my beautiful grandchildren.

I created Charlie as a means for children to learn with Charlie by having a growth mindset when it comes to facing new experiences and learning new things.

Children live in a world that is traveling ever faster, and my desire is to help them slow down and enjoy childhood through the adventures of Charlie Chaloosy. I hope children have fun with Charlie while engaging their minds through stories that encourage them to read, write, illustrate, and dream a little.

Childhood Innocence: My Desire for Charlie in the Children’s Literature Universe

I have had lots of time to think about why I decided to write the Charlie Chaloosy book series. I have determined that my driving passion is to use recurring childhood themes to give children a tool to grow and learn while having fun in an environment that protects their innocence. During my 34-year career in education, I have seen a shift in education with adults wanting to push sociological and ideological battles to younger and younger ages under the auspicious of “children will be exposed to this, so let’s get them ready to handle it.”

Using that same logic, most children go home to situations where there is some form of alcohol in the home; however, our job isn’t to educate children to be responsible drinkers, our job is to communicate “this isn’t for you.”

The concept of readiness was driven home to me during a family trip to Disneyland years ago when my daughter was very young and very tall for her age. I was excited to expose my children to things I loved; therefore, why wouldn’t I take my 3-year-old daughter on Space Mountain. Heck, she was tall enough so I was certain she would love it.

She is 29 now and the mother of three young children of her own, and just last week, the fingernail marks in the back of my righthand faded from holding her hand during the ride. Needless to say, my enthusiasm and desire to expose her to something new was a horrible idea because she wasn’t ready. My intentions and motivations were irrelevant in light of the fact she was too young to have gone on that ride. I am wiser in my 50s than I was in my 20s.

My desire for Charlie is to provide a fun and engaging literary platform for children to explore themes like friendship, confidence, anxiety, telling the truth, handling disappointment and so much more in an age-appropriate manner. Children need us to shield them from the hard things of the world, the best we can, while they grow and learn at a pace appropriate for young children. A child’s innocence is worth fighting for and Charlie and I would like to join you in that endeavor.

Each book in the Charlie Chaloosy series will end with two pages in the back where the young reader will be encouraged to draw and write their own part of the story where they apply the theme of the story and take action with Charlie to grow in a particular area by committing to trying something new.

I hope you and a special child in your life enjoy the book!
