We can all make a difference.
Elementary-school teacher Diane Trull's life-defining moment happened when her fourth-grade reading class saw a photo of a cardboard box overflowing with homeless puppies. Trull was no stranger to rescuing abandoned animals. She and her husband Mark had made it their mission to find permanent homes for stray dogs and cats. Now her young students were determined to save these lost pups and others like them. And in that moment, the Dalhart Animal Wellness Group and Sanctuary--known as DAWGS--was born.
How Trull and her fourth graders started their own animal shelter is a story of dedication, commitment, and perseverance. In this eye-opening, deeply personal book, Trull describes the challenges they faced, from rescuing and caring for the animals to teaching children about compassion and responsibility, to facing local interests opposed to having a shelter in their town. She shares inspiring stories about animals and animal lovers of all ages in this moving story of hope and compassion. DAWGS is a testament to how love and a strong measure of determination can offer second chances--one animal, one child, and one day at a time.

Let’s Go for a Walk!
Do you know that tomorrow, February 22nd, is National Walking the Dog Day?
In 1960, Jim Buck became the first professional dog walker in the U.S. when he offered to walk his friend’s dog while the dog’s owner was at work. As Jim’s business grew to walking 150 dogs a day, he recruited a small staff of dog walkers. Most of his assistants were female because Jim thought they were generally more compassionate to dogs who misbehaved.
Dogs need regular exercise, and walking your dog has proven benefits for both you and your canine companion, including lowering stress and weight management. And if you walk your dog just 30 minutes a day, you’ll meet the national recommendation for heart health. Taking your dog on a walk also offers social benefits. It’s a great way for you to meet other people and for dogs to socialize with other animals.
If you own a dog, you already know how much dogs enjoy venturing outside. Celebrate this day by taking your furry friend on a different route than normal. Dogs love exploring new sights, scents, and sounds. After all, a tired dog is a good dog!
And if you don’t have a dog to walk, then consider visiting your local animal shelter. Most shelters are always grateful when volunteers show up and help them with daily activities, such as walking dogs. And who knows, you might end up adopting a dog, and then you can enjoy walking the dog every day!
So, grab your walking shoes, a leash, and some dog treats, and take your favorite pooch for a stroll. And be sure to share photos of you taking your dog for a walk on social media using the hashtag #NationalWalkYourDogDay.

Diane Trull’s book DAWGS: A True Story of Lost Animals and the Kids Who Rescued Them is a heartwarming story of love, determination, and compassion. The author tells the story of Diane and her fourth grade students, who, after seeing a pictures of homeless puppies on the internet, began to save them and teach children about the importance of animal rescue. The book is well written and makes a great read.
Thank you for the opportunity to provide a guest post! My hope is that readers will be inspired by what a group of fourth-grade students were able to accomplish. Happy to answer any questions about the book!
