Source: iRead Book ToursJosh Sibley, singer/songwriter, is handsome, talented, smart and headed for oblivion. Alcohol provides relief when his demons threaten to overwhelm his every effort to break free of his past. When his friend Jennie Seger arranges for him to write songs for a multi-million-dollar feature, all his doubts and fears fall away, and he embraces the opportunity like a starving man who has found a bounteous feast during a famine.
Lightning strikes his lonely heart in the form of singer/actress Lila Levy who is married to the producer of the movie and flaunts her sexuality at Josh knowing her breathtaking beauty more than makes up for her lack of talent. Knowing his love for Lila is doomed from the start, he overlooks her shortcomings and keeps his feelings under wraps as he teaches her to sing his songs.
But this is Hollywood, and nothing is as it seems. Lila has secrets that Josh cannot begin to fathom and doesn't want to know. When her husband Stan is murdered, Lila disappears and Josh is confronted by the woman determined to track her down - Sergeant Rosemaria Baker of the Beverly Hills Police Department. Rosemaria is the opposite of Lila; she hates show business and considers Josh a delusional loser. When the cops track down Lila and bring her in, Lila declares herself innocent and the fight for the soul of Josh Sibley begins.

✨ My Thoughts on Deception✨
Britt Lind’s Deception peels back the shimmer of show business to reveal a dark, character-driven mystery. Josh Sibley is an instantly sympathetic lead—talented, self-sabotaging, and hungry for a chance to matter. His attraction to Lila is the book’s live wire; Lind lets that swoony rush curdle into dread at a satisfying pace, so the inevitable fallout lands with real sting.
The standout, though, is Sergeant Rosemaria Baker. She’s allergic to Hollywood nonsense and laser-focused on justice, and every scene with her tightens the screws. The case delivers classic thrills—missing starlet, secret agendas, money and lust in the mix—but what elevates the story is how Lind ties each twist to choice and consequence. Even the glamorous moments have teeth.
The pacing is brisk without feeling breathless; clues surface cleanly, and the final reveals play fair while still surprising. The content stays PG-13 adjacent—some language and sensuality—but the tension comes from moral pressure, not gore. Fans of Hollywood noir, romantic complications with consequences, and competent-woman-detective energy will have a blast. I turned the last page satisfied by the justice delivered and already curious about where Rosemaria’s instincts will take her next.

🖋️ Guest Post from Britt Lind
Today I’m thrilled to host Britt Lind for a guest post on why true-crime narratives—and the promise of justice—fuel her Hollywood Mysteries. From In Cold Blood to Ann Rule, Britt traces how real-world cases shaped Sergeant Rosemaria Baker’s moral compass and the series’ obsession with accountability. It’s a perfect companion to Deception—enjoy!
Many people think it’s very strange that I, known as a kind and gentle person who loves animals, can write books about terrible crimes and evil people. But for whatever reason, I always found true crime books absolutely fascinating.
It all started with In Cold Blood by Truman Copote. It was terrifying to realize people could just be going about their normal lives at home and end up murdered. Then I read The Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule, the goddess of true crime. She wrote about how she worked side by side with Ted Bundy at a suicide hotline office and never dreamed he was a serial killer. That made my imagination start to spin – you never know that someone you meet and think is normal may actually be a psychopath.
Wow! That concept is the driving force behind my newest Hollywood Mystery - Avarice. I kept reading true crime books by the masters, like Joe McGuiness who wrote Blind Faith, and then more books by Ann Rule and others. But what I really liked about all these books is that the murderer was always caught and brought to justice. I am a Libra through and through. Justice is all important to me.
My main character in the Hollywood Mysteries, Rosemaria Baker, also has a strong sense of justice. It drives her actions no matter what the danger may be to herself. For both people and animals, I too am driven by the need for justice. And the evil people in my books always get what they deserve.
⚖️Meet Britt Lind
Britt found out she had a passion for acting, singing, and writing as early as grade school. While attending junior college in Monterey she was discovered by Clint Eastwood when she was playing the lead in a dinner theatre play in Carmel and was cast in Clint's first directorial effort Play Misty for Me.
A few years later, Britt headed for L.A. to attend UCLA and to start her acting career. She obtained featured roles in dramatic series and worked her way up to guest starring roles in shows like Vegas, Columbo, Crazy Like a Fox, the miniseries How the West Was Won and worked on the daytime dramas General Hospital, Days of Our Lives and The Young and the Restless.
She moved to New York where she sang with a gospel group in venues such as Lincoln Center, Madison Square Garden, Town Hall, and Carnegie Hall. Family matters forced her to head back to her hometown of Seattle for what she thought was a temporary move and there was cast in an independent movie Family Hayes. She was also featured in a Showtime movie shot in Seattle, Nowheresville, played the lead in two Equity plays, Someone's Knocking, and The Good Doctor, and worked in Vancouver, BC on U.S. Productions, Sliders and For Hope.
Her memoir Learning How to Fly recounts her journey from Norway to Hollywood and from animal lover to animal activist and anti-vivisectionist. She has written four Hollywood Mysteries: Deception, Malevolence, A Fate Worse Than Death, and Avarice.
