My thoughts on Delaware from Freeways to E-ways

Delaware from Freeways to E-Ways: First State; Solid State by Dave Tabler is a fascinating look at how Delaware has changed over time. It covers how the state went from being all about factories and business to becoming more focused on technology and the digital world. This is the third book in Tabler’s Delaware History Overview series, and he does a wonderful job of making history easy to understand and fun to read.

One of the best parts of the book is how Tabler mixes facts with real-life stories and pictures. Instead of just listing dates and events, he shows how things like banking, roads, and the internet shaped Delaware into what it is today. It’s great to see how such a small place has had such a big impact.

This book is an entertaining read for anyone who likes history but doesn’t want it to feel like they are reading a textbook. Tabler keeps things engaging, and surprisingly well-paced. Whether you live in Delaware or just like learning about different places, Delaware from Freeways to E-Ways is definitely worth checking out.

I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

About Dave Tabler

Dave Tabler 2023 head shot

Ten year old Dave Tabler decided he was going to read the ‘R’ volume from the family’s World Book Encyclopedia set over summer vacation. He never made it from beginning to end. He did, however, become interested in Norman Rockwell, rare-earth elements, and Run for the Roses.

Tabler’s father encouraged him to try his hand at taking pictures with the family camera. With visions of Rockwell dancing in his head, Tabler press-ganged his younger brother into wearing a straw hat and sitting next to a stream barefoot with a homemade fishing pole in his hand. The resulting image was terrible.

Dave Tabler went on to earn degrees in art history and photojournalism despite being told he needed a ‘Plan B.'

Fresh out of college, Tabler contributed the photography for The Illustrated History of American Civil War Relics, which taught him how to work with museum curators, collectors, and white cotton gloves. He met a man in the Shenandoah Valley who played the musical saw, a Knoxville fellow who specialized in collecting barbed wire, and Tom Dickey, brother of the man who wrote ‘Deliverance.’

In 2006 Tabler circled back to these earlier encounters with Appalachian culture as an idea for a blog. AppalachianHistory.net today reaches 375,000 readers a year.

Dave Tabler moved to Delaware in 2010 and became smitten with its rich past. He no longer copies Norman Rockwell, but his experience working with curators and collectors came in handy when he got the urge to photograph a love letter to Delaware’s early heritage. This may be the start of something.

Guest Post from the author of  Delaware from Freeways to E-ways

“AI as a writing partner”

The craft of writing often feels like a solitary pursuit—just you, your thoughts, and the blank screen. Yet, as an author, I’ve discovered that solitude need not define the creative process. For the past two years, AI software has been my digital companion in writing, offering a unique kind of collaboration that blends the predictability of a tool with the dynamism of a (usually) insightful partner. I use ChatGPT, Perplexity.ai, and Anthropomorphic’s Claude.

When I first encountered AI software, I approached it with measured curiosity. I soon realized the potential extended far beyond grammar checks and stylistic suggestions. AI software became a sounding board, a brainstorming assistant, and even a sparring partner in crafting narratives and refining ideas.

One of the most valuable ways I’ve used AI software is for idea generation. Asking AI software open-ended questions or providing a kernel of a concept leads to an abundance of angles and possibilities. For example, while working on “Delaware from Freeways to E-ways,” I described the evolution of the state’s infrastructure and asked AI software for insights into potential thematic links between technological advancement and community transformation. The responses prompted me to explore narrative threads that highlighted the human impact of tech changes.

Organizing complex research into a coherent and compelling story often feels overwhelming. By feeding AI software sections of my notes or draft chapters, I’ve received suggestions on logical flow, thematic emphasis, and transitions. This collaborative process has helped me craft a manuscript that balances factual depth with narrative clarity.

Historical accuracy is critical to my work, and while AI suggestions are not a substitute for primary sources (hallucinations are still a thorn in the side), they do provide a starting point for exploration. AI recommendations have helped me uncover threads of information I might have otherwise overlooked, enabling me to dive deeper into archives, newspapers, journals, and books with a clearer focus.

Using AI software has introduced a layer of immediacy and interactivity that encourages experimentation. I can test narrative structures, refine historical arguments, or interrogate a concept in real-time, fairly confident that the responses will stimulate my creativity.

Critics of AI in creative writing often raise concerns about losing authenticity or voice. My experience has been mixed. Stylistically, AI software tends to default to the same words and phrases and often repetitively overstates the case. While it’s been a boon in helping me push boundaries and explore dimensions of storytelling I might not have considered on my own, I do have to edit the final version of any piece closely to make sure my voice isn’t overshadowed.

Writing remains deeply personal, but AI collaboration has enriched it in unexpected ways. ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity have become indispensable tools, not because they replace the hard work of writing, but because they push me to make my work more engaging and insightful. For authors curious about integrating AI into their process, I’d say: approach it with an open mind. The results may surprise you.
