About Dave Tabler

Dave Tabler 2023 head shot

Ten year old Dave Tabler decided he was going to read the ‘R’ volume from the family’s World Book Encyclopedia set over summer vacation. He never made it from beginning to end. He did, however, become interested in Norman Rockwell, rare-earth elements, and Run for the Roses.

Tabler’s father encouraged him to try his hand at taking pictures with the family camera. With visions of Rockwell dancing in his head, Tabler press-ganged his younger brother into wearing a straw hat and sitting next to a stream barefoot with a homemade fishing pole in his hand. The resulting image was terrible.

Dave Tabler went on to earn degrees in art history and photojournalism despite being told he needed a ‘Plan B.'

Fresh out of college, Tabler contributed the photography for The Illustrated History of American Civil War Relics, which taught him how to work with museum curators, collectors, and white cotton gloves. He met a man in the Shenandoah Valley who played the musical saw, a Knoxville fellow who specialized in collecting barbed wire, and Tom Dickey, brother of the man who wrote ‘Deliverance.’

In 2006 Tabler circled back to these earlier encounters with Appalachian culture as an idea for a blog. AppalachianHistory.net today reaches 375,000 readers a year.

Dave Tabler moved to Delaware in 2010 and became smitten with its rich past. He no longer copies Norman Rockwell, but his experience working with curators and collectors came in handy when he got the urge to photograph a love letter to Delaware’s early heritage. This may be the start of something.

Guest Post from Dave Tabler

Can you share something your readers wouldn’t know about you?

I rarely mention to people that I’m an Eagle Scout. But attaining that rank in the Boy Scouts was my first big achievement, and it taught me that hard work and discipline are well worth the effort. The Eagle rank is the highest rank in Boy Scouts, and quite difficult to complete. In 2023 there are 3,200 Eagle Scouts in the US. That’s it. Only 6% of young people who join Scouts BSA ever make it that far.

Just as in attaining the Eagle Scout rank, writing requires perseverance and motivation, particularly at the beginning. When absolutely no one knows what you’re capable of, or cares about your vision, having quiet confidence that you can, and will, do it, is key.

The path to Eagle Scout requires a fair amount of civic minded service. In my writing world that spirit of giving back to a broader community has manifested itself in my desire to offer lectures on Delaware history at libraries, museums, schools and civil associations.

The multiplicity of badges required to attain the rank of Eagle demands a breadth of knowledge and a spirit of curiosity. Each badge is a testimony to a scout’s commitment to continuous learning. My first two books, “Delaware Before the Railroads,” and now “Delaware from Railways to Freeways,” have likewise called for a tremendous amount of legwork and research to compile. This feels like familiar territory to me based on those early scouting experiences.

Scouting, done right, fosters a sense of camaraderie and belonging among members. The shared experiences of camping, learning, and growing together weave a tapestry of friendships with scouts from often radically different backgrounds. The interpersonal skills I learned then have certainly enhanced my adult interpersonal skills. I’ve always found a way to make common ground with a variety of editors, agents, ad reps, bookstore owners, and designers, many of whom are not particularly on my wavelength.

Through the crucible of Scouts BSA, then, I’m grateful to have been given the tools to forge a path of personal excellence. I hope my scrivenings will in some small measure give back to society.
