The totality of a solar eclipse lasts only a few short minutes. That’s more than enough time for an apocalypse to erupt.

Almost eighteen years have passed since the Eclipse changed the Earth forever, and Sebastian Za’in rose from the chaos and seized control, imposing his order on the broken planet. In a world ruled by fear and superstition, where all gods have perished, there is no one who can stand up to Za’in, the man rumored to be one of the Nephilim—hybrid offspring of Angel and Man. In a few short months, another Eclipse will occur, and while there are those who expect a new natural disaster, Za’in has plans of his own . . .

Completely unaware of this global turmoil, Kayla Steelryn has spent most of her life in a quiet village, longing to uncover her hidden past. When she leaves her home in search of answers, she finds herself faced with the truth about her identity, forced to choose between the two men she loves, and thrust into a conflict where she alone has the power to stop an event more disastrous than the end of the world.

My thoughts on Dominion of the Star

“Dominion of the Star” by Angelica Clyman is a post-apocalyptic novel that immerses readers in a world forever changed by a solar eclipse. Set almost eighteen years after the cataclysmic event, the story follows Kayla Steelryn, a young woman on a quest to uncover her hidden past and confront the ruthless ruler who threatens to plunge their world into further chaos. With the impending Eclipse and a web of complex themes, Clyman weaves a well-crafted adventure that combines spirituality, philosophy, and supernatural elements.

The book begins with a slow start, taking its time to establish the world and the characters. However, once the story gains momentum, it becomes engaging and thought-provoking. The post-apocalyptic setting is vividly depicted, and the author delves into the consequences and challenges faced by the survivors, exploring themes of resilience and adaptation in the face of adversity.

One of the strengths of Dominion of the Star lies in its portrayal of real, flawed characters. Kayla Steelryn is a relatable protagonist, driven by her desire for self-discovery and the need to uncover the truth about her past. The supporting cast also adds depth and complexity to the narrative with their own motivations and struggles. Clyman’s exploration of spirituality and philosophy, intertwined with supernatural elements, adds another layer of depth to the story, touching upon themes of forgiveness, redemption, and the dangers of false prophets.

While the book offers a well-crafted adventure, a few aspects could have been improved. The romantic triangle felt forced and did not significantly contribute to the overall plot, sometimes detracting from the main narrative. Additionally, the book’s length, spanning nearly 500 pages, occasionally resulted in wordiness, slowing the pacing and diluting the impact of certain scenes.

In conclusion, Dominion of the Star is a complex novel that invites readers into a post-apocalyptic world filled with intrigue and depth. While the story starts slowly, it eventually captures the imagination with its thought-provoking themes and engaging plotlines. Fans of post-apocalyptic fiction, especially those interested in exploring spirituality and philosophy within the genre, will find elements to appreciate in this book. Despite some shortcomings, Angelica Clyman’s debut offers a promising foundation for further exploration in the Descendants of the Fallen series.

I received a copy of the book from the author or publisher. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.
