Now on to my review of Ever Alice, a delightful re-telling of Alice in Wonderland, the tenth place finisher in the 2020 competition.
Ever Alice by H.J. RamsayPublished by Red Rogue Press on 08/01/2019
Genres: Adventure, Fairytale & Folklore Adaptations, Fantasy, Fiction, Magical Realism, Teen, Young Adult
Format: Audiobook, eBook, Paperback
Pages: 347
Alice’s stories of Wonderland did more than raise a few eyebrows—it landed her in an asylum. Now at 15 years of age, she’s willing to do anything to leave, which includes agreeing to an experimental procedure.
When Alice decides at the last minute not to go through with it, she escapes with the White Rabbit to Wonderland and trades one madhouse for another: the court of the Queen of Hearts. Only this time, she is under orders to take out the Queen.
When love, scandal, and intrigue begin to muddle her mission, Alice finds herself on the wrong side of the chopping block.

My thoughts on Ever Alice by H.J. Ramsay
Ever Alice by H.J. Ramsay continues the tale of Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. A few years later, we pick up the story as Alice is now fifteen and under pressure to denounce her previous claims about visiting Wonderland. When she doesn’t conform, she is sent to an asylum and then on to Switzerland for radical surgery for her madness. When she changes her mind, she escapes back to Wonderland, and her adventures begin again.
The author does a fabulous job of recreating the famous court of the Red Queen and many familiar characters, as well as creating new ones. A few characters are quite despicable, while I found myself rooting for others. There are humor and poignancy in the troubles Alice runs into on her journey.
The storyline intrigued me. I do love a look at different interpretations of a familiar book. For the most part, I enjoyed the plot. The pacing lags just a bit through the middle, but don’t consider giving up. The ending comes fast and furious with many twists and turns. I hope there is a sequel in the works. I believe there is a lot more of Alice’s story to reveal.
As a BBNYA panelist, I received a copy of the book for the competition. The following review is my honest, unbiased opinion.
