My thoughts on Fade to Blue

Fade to Blue by Hank Scheer is an incredibly suspenseful thriller! From the opening pages, I was fully immersed in the mystery. Although the premise is almost unbelievable, the author grips the reader so tightly that they don’t care about the story’s believability; they just want to read more.

The main character, Sarah, is a scientist with unmatched intelligence. However, she is also extremely relatable. Her passion for finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease leads her to make an unethical research decision that endangers her life, as well as the lives of her friends and family.

With no discernible way to distinguish between the bioterrorists and the legitimate government agents, she is forced to repeatedly fight for her life and flee the country. I won’t provide additional plot details because it’s a story best experienced firsthand, without any external influence.

It’s hard to believe that this is a debut novel. Fade to Blue is well-written and obviously extensively researched. The characters, settings, and action keep the reader turning pages long into the night. This book is definitely hard to put down; I read it from start to finish in just a few hours. Fade to Blue is a breathtaking, heart-pounding, suspenseful thriller that receives my highest recommendation for fans of this genre.

I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

About Hank Scheer

Author Bio blank image

Hank Scheer's writing journey began during a work break when a coworker said, "Hey, let's write a short story." They were working for a steel mill in Pittsburg, California, so brainstorming ideas became a fun way to pass the time.

At one point the following week, after the manufacturing process caused a computer to crash, Hank had his idea: an evil scientist creates a drug that destroys a person's brain.

Now it was a simple matter of plotting the story and writing it. Fade to Blue is the result of three trips to Paris, France, and long weekends spent driving around the San Francisco Bay area.

It doesn't involve steelmaking, but the science is just as real and the potential for trouble exponentially more terrifying.

Hank is now retired and lives in Martinez, California. He enjoys writing and recording music, world travel, biking, downhill skiing, and supporting other working people fighting for a better world.

Getting the facts right

In Fade to Blue, my protagonist Sarah Brenalen accidentally creates a brain-destroying drug and is forced to fight for her life after it gets into the hands of some dangerous people.

Before I’d written one word, I vowed to make every aspect of the story as realistic as possible. Achieving that goal took a lot of research and shoe leather.

To gather medical and scientific information about the brain, I spent a day at UC Irvine School of Medicine and toured their labs. I also visited NYU School of Medicine and interviewed several neuroscientists.

Since I live in Martinez, California, I decided that Sarah would reside in the Bay Area. That made it convenient for me to check out the locations described in the early chapters of the book.

I made Sarah an intelligent, strong, and courageous woman who does some amazing things to survive. But all her actions are believable. She doesn’t run through a plate glass window of an office building or miraculously dodge hundreds of bullets fired by a team of assassins.

The second half of Fade to Blue takes place in Paris. I went there three times for research. During my last visit, I again traced Sarah’s movements to ensure everything was accurate. Oh, no! In Chapter 19, she escapes and runs to the Place Baudoyer police station. To my dismay, the building that had been a police station was now the Buvette de l’Académie du Climat (“Climate Academy Refreshment Bar,” according to Google Translate.) I’d have to find another police station and rewrite Sarah’s escape.

I made the difficult decision not to worry about it. And so, while almost everything in the book is realistic, I used a bit of artistic license. The building in Place Baudoyer that’s now a refreshment bar will still be a police station in Fade to Blue.
