Heights terrify Ava. When a stranger saves her from plunging down a mountain, he diverts her fears with tales of Japanese kitsune—shapeshifting foxes—and she begins a journey into the supernatural.

She’s attracted to Chase, both physically and metaphysically, yet primal instincts urge caution when shadows suggest more than meets the eye.

She’s torn between Chase and Rafe, her ex, when a chance reunion reignites their passion, but she struggles to overcome two years of bitter resentment. Did Rafe jilt her, or were they pawns of a larger conspiracy?

Are the ancient legends true of kitsunes twisting time and events?

Excerpt from Fox Tale

“Why didn’t you answer my texts?” Still in pajamas, her hair disheveled, Mia was wild-eyed. “I can’t find the kitten. How did he get out?”

Though posed as a question, her accusation woke me from my stupor. All sense of peace and well-being dispelled, I glanced at the clock. “We spoke less than thirty minutes ago…”

“I’m sorry.” Mia put her hand to her temple. “I’m just so worried about Ichiro.”

“Relax, we’ll find him.” I glanced about the efficiency apartment. A search can’t take more than a few minutes. “I’ll start in the kitchenette.”

“And I’ll check my bedroom…for the fourth time.” Mia’s shoulders sagged.

Just as I was about to give up, I noticed a tissue box on the desk. Ichiro wouldn’t be in there…would he?

A tiny mew escaped. Then the kitten’s silky head popped up, and he began mewing loudly.

“You found him?” Mia ran in.

“Yup. The little stinker used the tissue box as a hideaway bed.” I lifted the kitten, cuddling him.

“Thank heavens!” Mia gave a deep sigh. “I didn’t know what to tell Atsuki.”

“Who cares what he thinks?” Her overreaction was getting on my nerves.

“I do.”

“Why?

“Because Atsuki takes an interest in this little guy. And what Atsuki likes, I like.”

“Since when?”

“I don’t know…recently. Actually, since last night…” Her brow wrinkling, Mia mumbled.

“What?”

“Something happened, but I can’t quite remember…Atsuki said something about cats…and foxes…I can’t recall.”

Cats and foxes again…My ears perked.

My Thoughts on Fox Tale

If you’re a fan of paranormal romance, “Fox Tale” by Karen Hulene Bartell is a journey you won’t want to miss. Our protagonist, Ava, starts off with a fear of heights that’s as tangible as it gets. But her life takes a thrilling turn when a stranger saves her from a perilous mountain mishap. Quite an entrance, wouldn’t you agree?

The plot thickens when this enigmatic savior introduces Ava to the world of Japanese kitsune—shape-shifting foxes. Suddenly, she’s plunged into a realm of supernatural intrigue. The chemistry between Ava and her savior, Chase, is electric, like sparks flying on a warm summer night.

But just as Ava starts getting comfortable with Chase, her ex, Rafe, reappears, stirring up a whirlwind of emotions. It’s a classic love triangle, with Ava torn between a budding romance and an old flame.

Adding to the suspense, Ava’s instincts warn her of impending danger. But what’s a good mystery without a protagonist who ignores a few warning signs, right? It’s this thrill of the unknown that keeps us flipping pages into the wee hours.

What sets “Fox Tale” apart is Bartell’s skill in weaving unique paranormal elements into the narrative. The blend of natural mirror warps with supernatural distortions is truly innovative. And the choice of foxes as the shape-shifters? Pure genius.

In conclusion, “Fox Tale” is a must-read for those who appreciate relatable characters, engaging backstories, and edge-of-your-seat plots. If you’re intrigued by shape-shifting tales, consider this book your next obsession. Trust me, it won’t disappoint.

Thank you so much for hosting KISSING KIN and me today! QUESTION FOR YOUR READERS: What’s the weirdest hiding place your cat / pet has ever found? (I HAVE found a kitten hiding in a shoe and a tissue box!)

    • Thanks for hanging out with us today. I wondered when I read that scene if you had experience with kitten in the tissue box! We collect barn cats around here. The latest to find us likes to sneak in the house. I found him once napping inside the recliner after about 2 hrs.

Oh, yes, we rescue cats, dogs, horses – that give LOTS of fodder for writing books 😉
