Ordinary Heroes: A Memoir of 9/11 by Joseph Pfeifer

From the first FDNY chief to respond to the 9/11 attacks, an intimate memoir and a tribute to those who died that others might live

When Chief Joe Pfeifer led his firefighters to investigate an odor of gas in downtown Manhattan on the morning of 9/11, he had no idea that his life was about to change forever. A few moments later, he watched as the first plane crashed into the World Trade Center. Pfeifer, the closest FDNY chief to the scene, spearheaded rescue efforts on one of the darkest days in American history.

The World Needs More Purple People by Kristen Bell and Benjamin Hart cover image

The World Needs More Purple People by Kristen Bell and Benjamin Hart

#1 New York Times bestseller!

Actress, producer, and parent Kristen Bell (The Good Place, Veronica Mars, Frozen) and creative director and parent Benjamin Hart have a new challenge for you and your kids: become a purple person by embracing what makes YOU special while finding common ground with those around you.

What is a purple person? Great question. I mean, really great! Because purple people always ask really great questions. They bring their family, friends, and communities together, and they speak up for what’s right. They are kind and hardworking, and they love to laugh (especially at Grandpa’s funny noises)! A purple person is an everyday superhero! How do you become one? That’s the fun part! Penny Purple will lead you through the steps. Get ready to be silly, exercise your curiosity, use your voice, and be inspired.

Looking to reach beyond the political divide of red and blue, Kristen Bell and Benjamin Hart have created a hilarious and joyous read-aloud that offers a wonderful message about embracing the things that bring us together as humans. This book will inspire a whole generation to paint the world purple!

  1. Hi Gina,
Glad to read your issue of Friday Finds. There are a lot of books to choose from. Would want to read ordinary heroes, by Joseph Pfeiffer. Praying for the heroes of 9/11 and their families.
The Italian baked chicken and vegetables look great.

    Warm regards,
    Chika.

  2. When I was nine or ten years old I was a football fanatic, and my parents gave me my first hard-covered book: A Pass and a Prayer, part of the Chip Hilton Sport Story series, by Clair Bee. It may have been published before I was born, and the players on the cover illustration didn’t even have face masks, but it didn’t matter. It was a sports book, full of action, suspense, and lessons in sportsmanship, and I loved it. And guess what: I just checked the lower level of the bookcase in the corner of my work room, and it’s still there, five decades later. Guess what I’m going to read today.
So chalk a vote up for Clair Bee.

  3. Oh gosh, my favorite children’s book author is a tough choice! I actually didn’t really have favorite authors until an author visited my elementary school. She wrote and illustrated her own books and it impressed me so much and that’s when I got the idea that I wanted to write and illustrate my own books. Her name was Laura Jane Coats and she wrote Marcella and the Moon and she wrote about a cat named Goodyear. Other authors who inspired me were Don Freeman who wrote Corduroy and Jan and Stan Berenstain who wrote the Berenstain Bears!

  4. Eve

Your question about my favorite childhood author(s) would be E.B. White, Andersen and Grimm, L. Frank Baum and your Purple People reminded me of someone called Crockett Johnson who wrote Harold and The Purple Crayon. Of course, I also loved Beverly Clearly and I’m still head over heels for Antoine de Saint Exupery. Honestly, I was a well read kid. LOL I used to join the summer reading competition at the library and my dad wondered how I could carry so many books!

    • I was the same way. The town library was just a block from my house. I had several pesky younger siblings, so I spent a lot of time at the library reading!

  5. The Question of the Week is:

Who was your favorite childhood author?

    I had two:

Robert C. O’Brien, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH

Gene DeWeese, The Adventures of a Two Minute Werewolf

Just might have something to do with why I now write paranormal sci-fi thriller novels featuring the modern day remnant of an ancient clan of werecats, torn apart as militaries on three continents vie to exploit their deadly talents.
