Friday Finds for 20 May 2022 | Book & Author News, BBNYA, Mexican Pizza & Strawberry Recipes, Wood Painting, Blog Roundup
Hello, my friends & welcome to the Friday Finds for 20 May 2022
What’s new in your world? Here on the farm, it’s the time of year to plant the vegetable garden, laugh at baby kitten antics, and enjoy time outside. Even if you aren’t a cat person… I dare you not to smile while watching kittens wrestle and tumble over each other. I’m looking forward to visiting with family and friends, grilling out, and making the most of the peaceful surroundings we have here this spring.
If you subscribe to the Friday Finds email list (form on the sidebar or bottom of the page), you get bonus material not found in this post. Plus I like to slip giveaways in there or sometimes I hide them here. Just like with Surprise Lilies, you never know when or where the gifts will pop up! Jessica A. won last week’s drawing.
Have a great day and be sure to say hi in the comment section below.

This Time Tomorrow by Emma Straub
What if you could take a vacation to your past?
With her celebrated humor, insight, and heart, beloved New York Times bestseller Emma Straub offers her own twist on traditional time travel tropes and a different kind of love story.
On the eve of her 40th birthday, Alice’s life isn’t terrible. She likes her job, even if it isn’t exactly the one she expected. She’s happy with her apartment, her romantic status, her independence, and she adores her lifelong best friend. But her father is ailing, and it feels to her as if something is missing. When she wakes up the next morning she finds herself back in 1996, reliving her 16th birthday.
But it isn’t just her adolescent body that shocks her, or seeing her high school crush, it’s her dad: the vital, charming, 40-something version of her father with whom she is reunited. Now armed with a new perspective on her own life and his, some past events take on new meaning. Is there anything that she would change if she could?

Outside Kids in an Inside World by Steven Rinella
In the era of screens and devices, the average American spends 90 percent of their time indoors, and children are no exception. Not only does this phenomenon have consequences for kids’ physical and mental health, it jeopardizes their ability to understand and engage with anything beyond the built environment.
Thankfully, with the right mind-set, families can find beauty, meaning, and connection in a life lived outdoors. Here, outdoors expert Steven Rinella shares the parenting wisdom he has garnered as a father whose family has lived amid the biggest cities and wildest corners of America. Throughout, he offers practical advice for getting kids radically engaged with nature in a muddy, thrilling, hands-on way, with the ultimate goal of helping them see their own place within the natural ecosystem. No matter their location—rural, suburban, or urban—caregivers and kids will bond over activities such as:
• Camping to conquer fears, build tolerance for dirt and discomfort, and savor the timeless pleasure of swapping stories around a campfire.
• Growing a vegetable garden to develop a capacity to nurture and an appreciation for hard work.
• Fishing local lakes and rivers to learn the value of patience while grappling with the possibility of failure.
• Hunting for sustainably managed wild game to face the realities of life, death, and what it really takes to obtain our food.
Living an outdoor lifestyle fosters in kids an insatiable curiosity about the world around them, confidence and self-sufficiency, and, most important, a lifelong sense of stewardship of the natural world. This book helps families connect with nature—and one another—as a joyful part of everyday life.

If you buy a Kindle book on Amazon you can usually add the Whispersync option for just a bit more money so you can pop back & forth between reading and listening.

I love planting season. Her in the mid-Atlantic we put our veggies in early in the hope of early harvest Jersey tomatoes … which are THE BEST tomatoes, if I say so myself. 🙂
Wait, me? Did I win?
Thank you so much for including Janelle’s book and YouTube channel. She spends so much time drawing and animating and she gets discouraged when she doesn’t get many views or subscribers. So I hope she’ll gain some momentum soon with her channel.
I’m currently reading 1984. It sure is strange reading it with what is going on these days. I have to hurry and finish reading it since it’s due back at the library on Tuesday!
I have some news to announce very soon. It’s not exactly author news, but it ties into my book business. I’ll send you a message if I have it ready in time for your next newsletter.
If you are in need of some news, my author friend just had a new book release and it’s an adorable book. I think she’s been on your blog before, but I’m not sure. Here is a blog post I wrote about her new book Beasley Helps by Rosie Russell: https://onesweetday48.wixsite.com/undergroundtoysociet/post/receiving-happy-bookish-mail
Have a great weekend!
Yes, you won, Jessica! The gift card has been emailed!
I can’t wait to hear your news. Rosie has been on the blog before, she may even be on the email list but I can’t remember.
I’ll look for her book.
Thanks for being such an active subscriber & bookish friend!
Thank you so much!
Wonderful suggestions! Thank you Gina! I just trimmed a tree outside and want to make slices! Lol. No, better not. Why, when I can order this cute kit!?
Either way is good, but I do find kits that have everything you need are ultimately less expensive than buying tools, paints, etc individually.
Thanks for stopping by, Eve. You are a true “friend of the blog”.
