Gina’s Friday Finds for 13 August 2021 – Announcements
I completely messed up last week’s drawing. Apologies to Jessica as she was the winner, and I was late adding her to the sidebar as the Author/Blogger of the Week. I hope you visit the winner each week. Be sure to leave a comment on this post to be entered for the next drawing. Prizes are usually a spot on the sidebar, top billing as the featured author of the week in my Bookshop, or a gift card for non-authors or bloggers.

Today is my birthday. I have so many special memories. Probably the best childhood birthday was when I turned 13 on the 13th (golden birthday). I had a giant princess castle cake with all the frills. I do remember that most of it was inedible, just frosting on cardboard. Fancy cakes have come a long way since then. I’m not saying how many years ago that was, but trust me…..it was a long time ago. Lol! So tell me, what is your favorite birthday memory? Do you believe it’s more fun to give gifts than receive?
Gina’s Friday Finds for 13 August 2021 – Books
The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See
The Island of Sea Women takes place over many decades, beginning during a period of Japanese colonialism in the 1930s and 1940s, followed by World War II, the Korean War, through the era of cell phones and wet suits for the women divers. Throughout this time, the residents of Jeju find themselves caught between warring empires. Mi-ja is the daughter of a Japanese collaborator. Young-sook was born into a long line of haenyeo and will inherit her mother’s position leading the divers in their village. Little do the two friends know that forces outside their control will push their friendship to the breaking point.

You’re going to be hearing lots more about this book.
The Book of Uriel by Elyse Hoffman
In the fires of World War II, a child must save his people from darkness…
Ten-year-old Uriel has always been an outcast. Born mute in a Jewish village known for its choir, he escapes into old stories of his people, stories of angels and monsters. But when the fires of the Holocaust consume his village, he learns that the stories he writes in his golden notebook are terrifyingly real.
In the aftermath of the attack, Uriel is taken in by Uwe, a kind-hearted linguist forced to work for the commander of the local Nazi Police, the affably brutal Major Brandt. Uwe wants to keep Uriel safe, but Uriel can’t stay hidden. The angels of his tales have come to him with a dire message: Michael, guardian angel of the Jewish people, is missing. Without their angel, the Jewish people are doomed, and Michael’s angelic brethren cannot search for him in the lands corrupted by Nazi evil.
With the lives of millions at stake, Uriel must find Michael and free him from the clutches of the Angel of Death…even if that means putting Uwe in mortal danger.
The Book of Uriel is a heartbreaking blend of historical fiction and Jewish folklore that will enthrall fans of The Book Thief and The World That We Knew.

Happy birthday Gina! Hope you’ve had a great day.
You should do as my sister does: she celebrates for two weeks.
I like the way your sister thinks!
HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY GINA AND MANY, MANY MORE.
ENJOY YOUR SPECIAL DAY AND EAT LOTS!!🎂🎂
First I love the looks of those recipes. Maybe I’ll try making them for both my parents.
As for the books, The Island of Sea Women looks intriguing and interesting enough but not sure about the other books but that’s my opinions. I guess I need to hear more before I make a final judgement.
I love finding these books and recipes. As an unpublished author myself I find it interesting and intriguing. The book I’m writing now is slow coming but hit a milestone and that’s I reached the 1/2 way point—YEAH!!
Happy Birthday Gina! I hope you have a great day!
I love giving and receiving equally because I love seeing the smile on the face of the giver when they see my reaction to the gift and I also love giving gifts to others.
My favorite birthday memories are of playing board games with my sister and our friend Eric. He was wheelchair bound with Muscular Dystrophy and passed away when he was 17 years old.
I’m excited for Halloween! I’ve been thinking about re-doing my Halloween Scare book with a new cover and my own illustrations this time. I used stuff from Canva last time and they have limitations on how much that can be downloaded.
Thank you so much for putting me on the side of your website last week! I feel so honored! My favorite post from the week was the Sherlock Holmes one. I think it’s cool others can write about Sherlock Holmes.
My suggestion for future Friday Finds would be for gift giving ideas for the upcoming holidays.
Have a Happy Birthday! 🎂
Happiest birthday Gina! 🎉🎈🎉🎈🎉🎈 I think it’s more fun to give than receive!
Happy Birthday Gina! I need to check out those pot pies! Yum. Great choices for reading too! Tweeted!
