Bringing WWII to Life for young readers
by Nancy McDonald, Author of Girl on the Run, The Doktor’s Daughter, Boy from Berlin, and One Boy’s War
When I first started writing historical fiction for young readers, specifically middle grade, bookstores were filled with stories about vampires, wizards, and mythical creatures. But that’s not what interests me.
My passion is history, particularly The Second World War. Turns out, my husband’s past provided the perfect opportunity – a gripping tale of escape from the Nazis while he was still a young child. I hoped I could bring that period in our history to life and, in the process, teach some very modern-day lessons in a way that kids could relate to.
But writing books and getting them read are two entirely different things. Would books about real-life persecution and loss, and trying to find your place in the world at a turbulent time, find an audience in middle graders?
I didn’t know, but I was determined to do everything I could to draw them in.
I started with a plucky hero (my husband in Boy from Berlin) – someone young readers could identify with – who was swept up in real-life peril. I told his story in his voice and crafted it carefully so that there was non-stop action and suspense from page one, and cliff hangers to ratchet up the tension and drive the plot. I wrote in short punchy sentences with minimal description, and avoided self-introspection. I also made sure that he was able to overcome the obstacles put in his way, using wit, bravery and resourcefulness that was unique to him and realistic for his age.
I kept the story to fewer than 40,000 words, and included an Author’s Note that provided historical context, and separated fact from fiction.
Finally, I chose a dramatic cover that I thought would appeal to middle-graders.
It wasn’t long after that first book was published that I got my answer. Yes, middle-grade readers – not all of them, but a lot of them – are captivated by historical thrillers set during WW II. They like that there are well-defined “good guys” and “bad guys”. That what happened back then is true, and that children just like them were caught in the thick of it as refugees, resistance fighters, and spies.
Just as important, their parents and teachers are drawn to my novels. They bring WWII to life and provide a vehicle for talking with young readers about a very difficult time in the world – and relating it to what’s happening today.
