My Thoughts on Grammie And Pupa’s House
Grammie and Pupa’s House by Daisy Butterfield is a charming children’s book that captures the warmth and nostalgia of visiting grandparents.
The story is simple yet heartwarming, and the beautifully detailed illustrations bring a sense of home and family traditions. I also enjoyed the simple lessons and recipes sprinkled throughout the book.
Making lemon meringue pie and buttermilk biscuits, gardening, and shooting marbles are just a few things you will enjoy watching Daisy learn.
It’s ideal for children and adults, offering a comforting tale that celebrates love, bonding, and the little joys found in everyday moments with loved ones.
I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

“I’m going to Grammie and Pupa’s house,” was the phrase my parents heard every Saturday morning. My grandparents really did live just two doors down from me, and at 7:00 A.M. I was there!
My grandparents grew up in simpler times before cell phones and laptops. Television back then had only three major stations ABC, NBC and CBS, and the local PBS station. So, there wasn’t a lot to watch on T.V. anyway. Instead, time was spent outdoors growing things, building things, and appreciating the nature all around us. It was so special!
Our fields were loaded with wild flowers of every imaginable size, shape and color. We would pick daisies and Queen Anne’s Lace and put them in food coloring, then flip them upside down to dry and create dried flower bouquets. We would plant crocus bulbs in the fall and watch them sprout in the spring even with snow still on the ground.
My Pupa was a gifted craftsman. He made the most beautiful bird houses and whirlybirds for his gardens. There was such an array of birds that would come and live at Grammie and Pupa’s house. It was like a symphony every morning. We had blue jays and bright red cardinals, red robins, crackles and chickadees.
Grammie taught me how to bake from scratch. Lemon meringue pie was one of her favorites to make. She didn’t even pull out a recipe, she just knew it by heart. During the summer she would make her famous baking powder biscuits, while Pupa picked strawberries and blended them with sugar to pour over the biscuits for the best strawberry shortcake ever!
I loved Sunday dinners at Grammie and Pupa’s, too. I remember one time when Grammie decided to make chicken and dumplings in her pressure cooker. I had never had dumplings before. I still haven’t. You see, we were in the kitchen when all of a sudden we heard a loud bang and turned around just in time to see the lid fly off the pressure cooker and the dumplings fly up and stuck to the ceiling. We laughed so hard.
I can’t wait to recreate some of those traditions with my own family someday. We need to get back to simpler times. There is so much joy to be had in creating something with your hands, and sharing it with friends and family – Grammie’s lemon meringue pie was always a big it with the relatives . . . and me! It’s still my favorite!
I wanted to write this book for two reasons: (1) to leave a legacy to my grandparents to say “Thank You” for their love and care, and (2) to let children know that there is a whole world yet to be explored right outside their door. I hope you enjoy Grammie and Pupa’s House as much as I did. I’m glad to share my memories with you.
