Overcoming the Inner Judge
Mark Twain once said that the art of writing is to apply the seat of one’s pants to a chair and to begin. That may be true, but it does not address the myriad of difficulties that follow that initial action.
Everyone knows writing anything is hard work. The greatest obstacle to overcome is the inner judge that whispers a litany of critical thoughts saying you are not up to the job at hand. First it brings up the list of neglected tasks that should be getting your attention. Failing that, it creates little nooses of self-doubt. The antidote is to be aware and counter with positive thoughts.
That done, let your imagination run loose. Jot down ideas that come to mind quickly. Let go of concerns of being worthwhile – feel free to be trivial.
Then comes the process of evaluation. Somewhere in what you have written will be a phrase or even just a word that stands out. Let it be the spark to start the fire of what will become the embodiment of your original concept. See how you can fit the other parts of what your imagination gave you to fill it out. Use whatever you can to best showcase your original moment of inspiration. Walk the difficult line of your freeform writings with what others might eventually want to read. This is where the inner judge needs to be allowed back in. The result should be a mix of all.
As we know, there is no formula, no easy or secure path to writing something meaningful. When we first sit down, we are inviting the requirement of a leap of faith. We may succeed or fail. Overcoming the critical inner judge is the reward.
