Why Gunner Gets No Grapes Stands Out Among Dog Books for Toddlers

Gunner Gets No Grapes is a sweet and simple story with an important message for even the tiniest of readers. Related to the Gunner Goes series, in this tale for toddlers, the lovable black Lab learns that not every human snack is safe for pups, especially grapes!

This book is perfectly written for youngsters. The font is large and easy to read, which is just what toddlers learning their letters need. The story is as engaging as all the Gunner Goes books. This helps young children understand the message without being confused..

Gunner Gets No Grapes has a kid-friendly list of common foods that can upset a dog’s tummy. All the food no-nos are presented in a way children can easily understand. The fun doesn’t stop when the story ends! Kids—and the grown-ups reading with them—will love the activities at the back of the book. From coloring to simple puzzles, it’s a playful way to keep the learning (and laughter) going.

This short and sweet story packs in a lot of heart and helpful guidance. If you’ve got a toddler who adores dogs, Gunner Gets No Grapes is a smart, safe, and smile-worthy addition to your bookshelf.

🐾 Talking Points for Gunner Gets No Grapes

Even the tiniest readers can start learning how to keep their furry friends safe! These fun little talking points are great for parents, caregivers, or teachers to chat about after story time.

  • 🥕🍗 Can you name some foods that are safe for dogs? What about foods that aren’t?
This helps young kids remember the story’s message and think about what their own pets should (and shouldn’t!) eat.

  • 🍇🚫 Why do you think Gunner couldn’t have grapes?
Just because it’s yummy for us doesn’t mean it’s safe for pups. This helps kids learn that some snacks are strictly for humans!

  • 🐾🍎 What's your dog’s favorite snack? Is it safe for them?
This question connects the book to real-life experiences with pets and encourages thoughtful conversation.

  • 🎨📖 Which page was your favorite? Can you draw a picture of Gunner?
A fun and creative way to extend the story experience through art.

  • ❓👩‍🦰🐶 What should we do if we’re not sure if a food is okay for a dog?
A great moment to reinforce that asking a grown-up or checking first is always the best idea.

About Karl Riemensperger

Karl Riemensperger & Gunner Author image

From first-time author, Karl Riemensperger, comes Gunner Gets Lucky!  Karl is a U.S. Marine veteran married to his wife Karen since 2009.  Together, they have shared a special love for the Labrador Retriever breed, and often volunteer their home as respite for dogs needing help finding a home.  Their daily lives and adventures with Gunner are the inspiration for the books.

Gunner was special,  quickly bonded with their young son, Kaiden, and they wanted to share his story with the world while also supporting rescues who are often in very dire financial straits.  Karl quickly got to work writing the first of the series, but the stories didn’t stop there and before they knew it, one book became four and more!

Having raised five children, Karl considers himself an expert in reading bedtime stories to children, with lots of practice over the years.  Karl wrote the books in this series while thinking of the kind of books he enjoyed reading to his children and with the humor of the child and parent in mind.
