My thoughts on Happenstance Farms
Happenstance Farms: A New Home, authored by S. McMichael and illustrated by Justo Borrero is a beautiful picture book.
It’s a simple tale about a young girl & her horse moving to a new training stable. With the move, doubts begin to plague Savanna. Will she fit in, make new friends, like her teacher, and be happy at the new farm?
The story touches on fears and doubts many young children have, whether it’s starting a new hobby or attending a new school.
Follow along while Savanna & her horse, Coffee make new friends and learn that change isn’t always a bad thing.
I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

Author Interview
Where do you get inspiration for your stories? I get inspiration from actual events that occur daily. There are so many life lessons in horseback riding. It teaches kids to get back on when they fall off a horse. It shows how complicated relationships can be and how critical it is to work together as a team. Riding a horse/pony teaches patience, perseverance, compassion, humility, sportsmanship, confidence, a strong work ethic and so much more. There are so many options to choose from, the hard part is narrowing down the story.
Talk about the people who have supported your writing career. My writing career just started this year. God has truly blessed me! My family, the Happenstance Barn family, and friends have been incredibly supportive of the book. I have also had a lot of support from riders, trainers, local barns, Moms, and Dads. I have really been surprised at the enthusiasm and support from the equestrian community and the St Louis area in general.
Name a quirky thing you like to do. At the barn, I like to sweep or clean a horse stall. It’s something that needs to be done every day and it keeps you humble.
Favorite travel spot? My favorite travel spot is Cabo San Lucas. I love going in early December when it’s not very crowded and the weather is simply beautiful. We meet Savanna’s Godparents there each year and we have a great time together. They get to spend time with us and we all get to enjoy a vacation together.
How did the idea for the book originate? The idea for the book came from Savanna’s trainer Ellen. It was Ellen’s observation of Savanna’s and Eli’s relationship that led to the book. Ellen mentioned that she owns Eli and he never gets as excited about seeing her as he does when he sees Savanna.
