This is an issue that the author strongly cares about and wants to communicate with the world.

It is paramount to educate children about the environment when they are young. After all, it is the future generations that will determine the future of our planet.

In the first story, Alfie, inspired by the author’s rescue pet, the African grey parrot, explores the world to help save endangered species, specifically the hyacinth macaw.

My Thoughts on Alfie’s Adventures Book 1 – Hyacinth Macaw

Alfie’s Adventures: Hyacinth Macaw by Hayley Jane Smith is a beautiful and educational book for children and adults who care about the environment. The book follows Alfie, a charming African grey parrot, who travels to Brazil to meet Azul, a naughty hyacinth macaw.

Along the way, they witness the devastating effects of deforestation on Azul’s rainforest home and the other animals who live there. Alfie teaches Azul and the readers how they can help protect the environment and stop the destruction of the wild places where animals can be free.

The book is well written and illustrated, with a fun and engaging tone that captures the personalities of the parrots. Alfie is adorable and very realistic, as I have some experience with African grey parrots, and they are striking birds with a playful side.

The book also delivers a crucial life lesson about the importance of environmental conservation and the role that everyone can play in it. Alfie lists a few simple things that we can all do to help, such as recycling, planting trees, and using less paper. The book explains these concepts in a simple and straightforward way that is suitable for the target age group of the readers.

The book also provides helpful tips and information to spark discussions between adults and children about these topics and why they matter. This book is a great way to introduce children to the wonders of nature and its challenges and inspire them to become more aware and responsible citizens of the planet.

Improvement begins with understanding, and Alfie’s Adventures: Hyacinth Macaw is a beautiful book to help us do just that.

I may have received the book from the author, publisher, or tour company. Otherwise, it is from my personal library or Kindle Unlimited.

This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

About Hayley Jane Smith

Learn a little about Hayley Jane Smith:

Born in 1989 and growing up in Witney, Oxfordshire, I have always loved and cared for the natural world and animals. Drawing has always come naturally to me from a young age and my obsession with birds is often reflected in my illustrations.

As a shy and reserved child, I struggled in social situations and was eventually diagnosed with autism and dyslexia at the age of 20. Following school, I enrolled at Bristol University to read Zoology. Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with OCD and left the university early to receive treatment.  I became so unwell that I was hospitalised at the age of 25, where I drew birds everyday to help me cope. As my OCD gradually improved, I met my now husband at the age of 28, who has supported me in my recovery and given me my life back. He encouraged me to apply for an illustration masters degree with Falmouth University, and I was lucky enough to be offered a place based on my portfolio.

During my masters degree, I was presented with the challenge of developing my own visual narrative on a socially driven issue. Having never written a story before, I did not consider myself to be any good at this, especially having dyslexia, autism and OCD (which can make my thinking quite matter of fact). As I care greatly about environmental and wildlife conservation, especially in respect to parrots, I chose to attempt to communicate this issue through a children’s story.

Surprised by how much enjoyment I gained from creating my story, I decided to refine it after my masters degree, by improving the illustrations. Through encouragement from my husband and parents, I sent my manuscript to publishers. There were a lot of ups and downs, but ‘Alfie's Adventures: Hyacinth Macaw’ was published by Bumblebee Books, an imprint of Olympia Publishers, on 28 September 2023.

Now having my OCD under control, when I am not drawing, I enjoy life spending time with my husband and family enjoying walks, cooking, sightseeing, travelling, running and looking after my houseplant collection and rescue pet African grey parrot, Alfie.

Through the story "Alfie's Adventures", I express my concern about human impact on the natural world and want to inspire future generations to care for and conserve nature and our environment.
