My thoughts on In Extremis

In the book “In Extremis,” part of Matt Duggan’s trilogy The Rosy Dream, readers are taken on a captivating journey through the landscapes of Los Angeles in the 1990s and 2008. The main character, Jack Darmody, experiences a series of adventures and encounters with individuals unraveling a web of secrets and truths that challenge his perceptions of life and identity.

The novel expertly blends these two timelines, immersing readers in the essence of Los Angeles and its darker side. Through elements of suspense, reflection, and dark humor, “In Extremis” delves into the intricacies of behavior, the pursuit of purpose, and the unconventional paths one might choose to follow.

“In Extremis” captures the spirit of Kerouac’s work “On the Road,” offering a modern interpretation of self-discovery while continuing Jack’s narrative from “Ostraca,” book one in the series. This story stands firmly on its own, but I always recommend you read a series in the author’s preferred order for the best experience. Thought-provoking yet entertaining, the author infuses elements of wit and humor to enhance the nature of this tale.

“In Extremis” explores nature and examines emotions and life skills through the lens of a young man seeking answers in a complex world.

This book wraps up nicely while leaving fans eagerly looking forward to the final book in the trilogy. I suggest this series for those who like mysteries, thrillers, suspense, and literary fiction.
