It's OK to have feelings.
Everyone has feelings. Happy, sad, and angry are feelings we all have felt at one time or another. As you grow up, you start to feel other feelings. Can you guess what some of them might be?
What happens to our bodies when we start to feel these feelings? When you're happy, you feel like the sky is blue, the sun is out and you can see unicorns and rainbows. Your smile is bigger, and your eyes have a sparkle in them. What happens to your body when it's a feeling you've never felt before?
Come along and join in with all the other children learning how to identify feelings and what happens to their bodies when they feel those feelings.
Remember, it's OK to have feelings!

Excerpt from It’s OK to Have Feelings
Has there ever been a day where you feel as happy as can be?
The sun is shining; the sky is blue… wait,
can you see a unicorn or two?
These are the best days; I definitely agree. When you
feel happy, your smile is bigger, your voice is full of
laughter, and your whole body is bursting with joy.
It’s OK to have feelings xx
On other days, you may feel sad. The sky appears
a little grey; the unicorns have gone away.
You may be teary and quiet, and perhaps you have no energy.
Just remember, though…
It’s OK to have feelings; these feelings of sadness will pass.
Tomorrow is another day.

My thoughts on It’s OK to Have Feelings
The mother-daughter team of Aileen Pound and Michaela Robertson Keene explore feelings in this beautiful picture book.
Emotions are difficult at the best of times, the pandemic has made dealing with them even harder.
The book opens with simple feelings of happy and sad. Then it moves into ever more complex emotions such as embarrassment, fear, anger, and love.
This book is perfect for bedtime reading and opening the discussions between adults and children concerning emotions, what they mean, and the best ways to handle them.
I recommend It’s OK to Have Feelings to every family, caretaker, and library.
I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

An Interview with Aileen Pound
If I could expand beyond the feelings in my book, what would I include and why?
If I could expand beyond the feelings in my book, I would add the following:
Hurt
Annoyed
Silly
Brave
As children grow older, their feelings expand; ideally, it would be great to be able to cover all the feelings, but that would take more books than I could probably write.
I think the above feelings would be essential to write about because they are ones that a child will encounter sooner rather than later and may not necessarily readily identify with these feelings.
A child isn’t going to understand why they are feeling hurt, and they may not necessarily understand physically what is going on inside their body when they are feeling that way. So I think it’s important for a child to know that they are feeling hurt because… and that’s it’s OK to feel this way.
As an adult, I feel annoyed; sometimes, I don’t even know why I’m feeling that way. That can be more frustrating than anything. So I think that it is important for a child to understand that sometimes you may not be able to identify at the time what’s annoying you, but that’s OK. Sometimes the feeling will pass, and sometimes you will work out why you were feeling annoyed, and you can work on not feeling that way anymore.
Feeling silly, well, I think this is just a fun feeling. We have all had days where we feel silly, and we don’t know why. There is absolutely nothing wrong with feeling silly!
I think feeling brave is an important one for a child to learn early. There will be so many times in a child’s life they will need to be brave. Sometimes they will be brave without knowing they are, and sometimes, they need to find the courage to be brave.
When Michaela and I wrote this book, it was essential for us to help children understand that all feelings are OK. Understanding your feelings helps you with your mental health. As a mum, I feel that it is vital to help your child with their mental health. To teach and give them tools that may help them in their teens and into adulthood.
