Genres: Contempoary Romance, Fiction, Friendship, Humorous, LGBTQ, Romance, Romantic Comedy, Self-Esteem, Young Adult
Format: Audiobook, eBook, Hardcover, Paperback
Pages: 400
Contrary to popular belief, best friends Kate Garfield and Anderson Walker are not codependent. Carpooling to and from theater rehearsals? Environmentally sound and efficient. Consulting each other on every single life decision? Basic good judgment. Pining for the same guys from afar? Shared crushes are more fun anyway.
But when Kate and Andy’s latest long-distance crush shows up at their school, everything goes off-script. Matt Olsson is talented and sweet, and Kate likes him. She really likes him. The only problem? So does Anderson.
Turns out, communal crushes aren’t so fun when real feelings are involved. This one might even bring the curtains down on Kate and Anderson’s friendship.

My thoughts on Kate in Waiting by Becky Albertalli
From #1 New York Times bestselling author and rom-com queen Becky Albertalli comes a buoyant new novel about daring to step out of the shadows and into the spotlight in love, life, and, yes, theater.
[PRINCIPAL CAST LIST]
Kate Garfield
Anderson Walker
Best friends, and contrary to popular belief, not co-dependent. Examples:
Carpooling to and from theatre rehearsals? Environmentally sound and efficient.
Consulting each other on every single life decision? Basic good judgment.
Pining for the same guys from afar? Shared crushes are more fun anyway.
But when Kate and Andy’s latest long-distance crush shows up at their school, everything goes off-script.
Enter Stage Left: Matt Olsson
He is talented and sweet, and Kate likes him. She really likes him. The only problem? So does Anderson.
Turns out, communal crushes aren’t so fun when real feelings are involved. This one might even bring the curtains down on Kate and Anderson’s friendship.
Kate in Waiting personifies high school. The anguish and the joy compete for supremacy. Cliques, secrets, crushes and more are the realm this story is played out in.
No matter how old we get, it’s hard to forget all those feelings we were once dominated by.
I loved the theater aspect of the novel. It made for a unique setting and I enjoyed it immensely. Kate and Anderson are the cutest non-couple ever. Best friends who share crushes is a fun idea.
While I believe the book is written to entertain the reader, it also touches on introverts, gay issues, and so many more subjects relevant to today’s teens and young adults.
The final chapters wrapped the story up in a satisfying manner. I would recommend this book to most young adults, as it shows the messes we can get into through misunderstandings, yet also conveys the joy of youth.
So why did I take off a star in my rating? Language, plain & simple. While I am no prude and have been known to drop a few foul language bombs, I felt like the use of F*** and F***-boys was over the top. I would hesitate to suggest this book to younger teens.
The word was used so frequently that it began to pull me out of the story when I saw it on every page. Yes, high school kids curse like mad, but they vary their curses and can be quite creative with them. This read like it was a planned aspect to drop the f-bomb so many times per chapter.
Now that we have that out of the way. I truly did enjoy the characters and the story. I think many, many readers will fall in love with Kate and Anderson, as well as the supporting cast. I look for the book to make a deep run on the best-seller list of its genre.
I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.
