After stoking rebellions across the globe, six super-powered LO-ECs dealt a massive blow to the military by disabling their worldwide communication tower. But in doing so, they suffered grave injuries, and Spidre, the world leader, will not let them rest. As he desperately clings to power, there is only one course of action for the LO-ECs: hide and heal, then finally bring the fight to Spidre’s front door.

Breaching Spidre’s force field will require splitting up and launching simultaneous surprise attacks all over the world. And in some of these places, the military is the least of the LO-ECs’ concerns. They’ll also face legions of robots controlled by an eccentric oligarch, guerilla outfits led by their own super-powered LO-ECs, and the ever-present threat of being discovered and bombed into dust by a world leader with nothing left to lose.

If their power is enough to survive all of this, the reward for the LO-ECs is a confrontation with Spidre at his compound, complete with all of the secrets and plans he has amassed for the last twenty years.

Excerpt from Kinetics

“We’ve got to leave now!” Naren yelled to Edgar and Symon as he landed and set Sera down. She was shaky, but able to stand on her own. Symon and Edgar were walking onto the field from a tunnel in the southeast corner of the stadium. Both of them had their hands wrapped around the grips of their elcycles, powerful electric motorcycles powered by their LO-EC energy. Walking with them was Eric, the person who had taken up the role of leading the rebellion in Pittsburgh.

“You’re leaving!? After what just happened!?” Eric screamed.

“That happened because we’re here!” Symon snapped back. “We need to get out of this city, and do it loudly enough that everyone knows we’re gone.”

“Sera told me the plan before she took off. Together we programmed the coordinates for her garden in New Orleans,” Edgar said.

“We aren’t going to New Orleans,” Naren replied. Sera’s head snapped up to look at him, then as she realized the issue, her head sank.

“Isn’t it the closest place that we have a safe hideout?” Edgar asked. “They just tried to bomb us here. If we get spotted entering New Orleans, the same thing will happen. It’d be the same no matter where we go. If there are peacekeepers there, then it isn’t safe now.”

“So where do we go?” Sera asked, her eyes filled with tears.

“Why are you all standing around?! We have to get to Symon’s hideout!” Nadine screamed as she and Victor set their feet on the ground. She was happy and relieved to know she could now carry him with little effort. The last time she had tried, it was almost a disaster.

The plan clicked into place in everyone’s head. They had spent weeks at Symon’s hideout, an old house in an abandoned city called San Diego. It was now their best chance at hiding out without risking the lives of others.

“Eric, we’re going to blast right through the peacekeeper’s front line, make sure they know we’ve left the city. Go up into the lookout and signal to us if you see any targets we can hit,” Naren directed.

“Victor, you’ll be at the front. When we get the signal from Eric up high, you mow the road,” Naren said. Victor nodded.

“Edgar, you’ll be on an elcycle in the middle, with Sera riding in front of you,” Naren continued. “If anyone gets close, you know what to do. Symon, you’ll be in the back providing suppressive fire to our rear as we escape. Nadine and I will be up high and go wherever we’re needed.”

When Naren concluded his directions, everyone moved with haste. Edgar and Symon re-programmed the elcycles to go to San Diego and put them into position at the north of the field. Symon reached into one of the cargo bags on the elcycle and pulled out the retrofitted peacekeeper armor part that he’d had since the first major battle in Chicago. He slid his arm into the piece of armor and when it connected with the microtransformer in his hand, the mounted machine gun whirred to life, ready to fire once again. Naren helped Sera onto the other elcycle. Edgar hopped on behind her, and they were ready to go.

About Nathaniel Koszer

Nathaniel Koszer NEW author photo

Nathaniel Koszer grew up in Brooklyn, New York, but now calls the Bronx home along with his wife and their sons. Nate grew up on all things sci-fi. Partly due to his chronic illness, Nate always had a special place in his heart for the X-Men, especially the invulnerable Wolverine. This was a heavy inspiration for his first novel, Latency, a superhero sci-fi story, which was released on March 5, 2024. His second novel, Kinetics, will be released on March 4, 2025.

Guest Post from the Author of Kinetics

My latest novel, Kinetics, is a superhero sci-fi thriller with six superpowered main characters: Sera, Naren, Nadine, Edgar, Symon, and Victor. Those who read my last novel, Latency, will immediately realize that Kinetics is a direct sequel. Sera and Naren drove the story in Latency, so I was very surprised when, after I finished Kinetics, it turned out to be Victor’s story with Symon as the secondary main character. So, I thought I would use this space to give folks the back story on these two characters who snuck their way into the spotlight.

VICTOR

Victor’s power is immense, but incredibly risky. His body produces an insane amount of biological energy, too much for it to handle. The result is superhuman speed that is unmatched even by his fellow superpowered LO-ECs. By the end of Latency, he is fast enough to run on water while suffering from a gunshot wound to his belly. If he flicks his arms fast enough, Victor can create forceful bursts of air to use as a projectile weapon.

The downside is that if he uses his power too much, his body overloads on energy, which once which very nearly killed him. Victor is smart and observant, but due to his past, he is lacking in a lot of the daily knowledge that his peers take for granted, and at times this is cause for frustration.

Victor spent his youth living with his parents in Chicago. However, his family were avid fans of the outdoors, and they frequently spent time camping in the areas of Louisiana that still had forest. He was eight years old when the extermination campaign came to Chicago. When all hope seemed lost, his parents told him to use his speed to run out of the city and keep running until he made it to their campsite in Louisiana.

Victor did this and then spent the next twenty years on his own, in the woods, surviving off of what he could forage or steal from military transports. Unbeknownst to Victor, his thefts were noticed by Naren, who discovered them during the investigation that eventually led him to Sera. When Naren and Sera make a plan to ambush the androids that killed her parents, they plan the attack out on the open road, hoping the ruckus will attract Victor if he happens to be nearby. Luckily enough he was, and gets pulled into the fight despite knowing nothing of what was happening.

After the fight, everyone including Victor is injured and after some trepidation, he agrees to let everyone rest and dress their wounds at his camp in the middle of nowhere. He later agrees to accompany them all to Symon’s hideout across the country in San Diego, and after further indecisiveness, agrees to continue fighting with the rest of the LO-ECs as they attack military occupations around the world.

During one attack, the LO-ECs get ambushed and Victor has to fight hard to escape. Doing this overloaded his system and he collapsed, convulsing on the ground while surrounded by gun-toting soldiers. The other LO-ECs manage to pull him out and Symon saves his life with some quick knife work, but the experience left Victor and Symon riddled with anxiety about Victor’s future.

SYMON

Symon is a genius inventor and engineer, and his knowledge of the technology that generates their powers is unmatched. Symon is what his world would consider a “typical” LO-EC. The biotechnology in his body allows him convert excess body heat into electricity that can power devices, and he is stronger and faster than a regular human, but that’s it. No flashy superpowers like Victor or the others. However, the electricity he generates can connect to a retrofitted machine gun he designed with the help of May, another engineer and his lover. His firepower has proven useful countless times in the LO-EC’s battles with the military.

Symon used to work for the high ruler of earth, Bartholomew J Spidre, making technology that would assist in keeping the LO-ECs under control. Among his inventions were the androids that, later on, killed Sera’s parents. When Spidre changed course and decided to start an extermination campaign, he did so by dropping an atomic bomb on the fully-LO-EC Salt Lake City, where Symons long-time partner still lived. Symon lost it and attacked Spidre, not knowing that Spidre was a superpowered LO-EC himself. Symon lost and was very nearly killed, but survived and hid for the next twenty years.

When Symon heard that a fighting tournament was being hosted in Los Angeles, he traveled there hoping to use the commotion to find some goods he missed while hiding. Instead, he witnessed the fight between Edgar and Nadine, where they both revealed their LO-EC powers and Nadine was captured. Symon was able to pull Edgar out of the chaos, and they go after the convoy taking Nadine away. As they help her escape, they are intercepted by none other than Spidre himself. After a brief but intense fight they manage to escape, and Symon heads back to his hideout while Nadine and Edgar race across the country towards Nadine’s brother Naren, who needed their help for the android ambush.

After the successful ambush, Nadine and Edgar find Symon’s hideout and have the other three LO-ECs with them. Symon fills in the five younger LO-ECs about their history, including his involvement in the LO-EC extermination. This revelation causes several intense shouting matches, but after Symon reveals that he too lost someone because of Spidre’s actions, they reconcile. Symon then joins the other LO-ECs for most of their battles across the world.

For those who are interested, short bios for the other four main characters can be found in other posts for this marketing tour. I wrote about Sera and Naren on Long and Short Reviews (LASR), and about Nadine and Edgar on Fabulous & Brunette. I hope you liked learning about the characters, and I hope you enjoy Kinetics and the Energy Crisis series!

  1. […] ~~~Kinetics, my second novel, is a superhero sci-fi thriller and a direct sequel to 2024’s Latency. It occurred to me that not everyone who reads these blog posts will have read Latency, and many may not want to have that homework before diving in to a newly found nugget of interest. So, I thought I would use this space to introduce two of the six main characters in the series: Sera and Naren. You can also find character bios about the other four characters on other stops of this tour! Nadine and Edgar are explored on Fabulous and Brunette, and Victor and Symon are written about on Gina Rae Mitchell’s blog. […]
