✨ My Thoughts on Kittiwake Stormhaven and the Pirate's Portolano

Kittiwake Stormhaven and the Pirate's Portolano is a spirited, sea-swept middle-grade adventure that bursts with energy from the very first chapter. Victoria Williamson creates a rich, waterlogged world where floating islands replace continents and the ocean holds as many secrets as it does storms. Kittiwake is a wonderfully brave and curious protagonist—determined, warm-hearted, and easy to root for as she faces everything from pirate attacks to ghostly captains.

The emotional heart of the story lies in Kittiwake’s discovery that her long-lost sister, Petrel, has become a feared pirate queen. The tension between family loyalty and personal responsibility creates stakes that feel real, even in a whimsical, fantastical setting. The shipmates—and especially Caboodle the mischievous monkey—add charm and humor that young readers will adore.

The pacing is snappy and the illustrations by James Brown bring the world to life beautifully. Some moments wrap up a bit quickly, but the overall experience is satisfying, engaging, and full of imaginative flair. It’s the kind of story that inspires curiosity, courage, and the belief that even the smallest adventurer can make a mighty difference.

A bright, buoyant read perfect for middle-grade fans of pirates, secrets, storms, and sisterhood.
