Magic. Sailing. A murderer among heroes.
Gravedigger Volke Savan wants nothing more than to be like his hero, the legendary magical swashbuckler, Gregory Ruma. First, he needs to become an arcanist, someone capable of wielding magic, which requires bonding with a mythical creature. And he’ll take anything—a pegasus, a griffin, a ravenous hydra—maybe even a leviathan, like Ruma.
So when Volke stumbles across a Knightmare, a creature made of shadow and terror, he has no reservations. But the Knightmare knows a terrible secret: Ruma is a murderer out to spread corrupted magic throughout their island nation. He’s already killed a population of phoenixes and he intends to kill even more.
In order to protect his home, his adopted sister, and the girl he admires from afar, Volke will need to confront his hero, the Master Arcanist Gregory Ruma.
A fast-paced fantasy with magical creatures for those who enjoy the Furies of Calderon (Codex Alera series) by Jim Butcher, Unsouled (Cradle Series) by Will Wight, and Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan.

My thoughts on Knightmare Arcanist by Shami Stovall:
Just when I thought I was getting burnt out on fantasy stories, along came Knightmare Arcanist from Shami Stovall. The first book in the Frith Chronicles is fantastic.
Stovall’s world-building skills are superb. The writing is clear and concise, yet paints glorious pictures of the islands, seas, battles, and magical creatures.
The characters are rather typical teens at the beginning. You have bullies, beauties, the sheltered, and lowly orphans all interested in improving their status and reaching their goals. Can they mature, put aside their petty differences, and grow into a cohesive group? They must if they are to survive the magic, hardships, and trials directed at them by monsters and madmen.
The story is captivating from the opening pages until the final words. The words inside this book are as fabulous as the cover. It leaves you reaching for the next in the series without pause. If you don’t have Kindle Unlimited, this is a great time to try it. You will recover your expense with the books from this author!
Remember Shami Stovall’s name. You are going to see it among the greats of fantasy storytellers.
I highly recommend this book to lovers of great fantasy and high adventure, no matter your age.

I don’t read a lot of fantasy, Gina, but this book certainly sounds like one I could make an exception for. Great review.
O I really wish I had time to read this one to do a review as part of this tour!!!
Great review, Gina. 🙂 I, too, read this book as a part of this blog tour and found it to be an excellent addition to the fantasy genre.
