Why This Memoir Stands Out

Laughing Through the Storm is more than a story about living with epilepsy. Jane Rogers approaches difficult moments with humor, honesty, and a refreshing ability to laugh at life’s most chaotic situations. Her storytelling blends heartfelt reflection with lighthearted moments, reminding readers that resilience often grows in the middle of life’s messiest experiences.

Excerpt

Curious what Jane’s storytelling style is like? Here’s a glimpse inside the memoir.

New city, same weird me. My father, ever the trooper, battled the long and winding roads to Ottawa, braving a thirteen-hour drive in our trusty navy blue Oldsmobile with Romeo and Juliet squawking in the back seat. That car groaned with age every time you turned the key, but it had heart and a surprisingly spacious back seat. Knowing my father, he would have put the pedal to the metal to get to Ottawa as fast as possible so he would not have listen to our exuberant budgies for any longer than he needed to.

“Shut up—I am trying to drive here!” I could picture him yelling.

They’d chirp back even louder in protest.
By hour six, I’m sure my dad was questioning every life choice that led him to be trapped in a rolling cage of bird chaos. And yet, he powered through, likely developing a new-found respect for the phrase “Silence is golden.” When he finally arrived in Ottawa, he stepped out of that Oldsmobile looking like a man who had survived a battle with feathers instead of bullets. I’m convinced he vowed never to take another road trip with birds again. And I don’t blame him.

My mom, Sam, Henry, and I took to the skies. It felt like a grand adventure to soar above the clouds, and I remember pressing my face against the airplane window, mesmerized by the tiny cars crawling along the roads below as we began our descent.

Behind every powerful memoir is a voice shaped by real experience. Here's a little more about Jane Rogers.

Fun Fact: Jane once had a seizure during a comedy show— and still insists the comedian owes her one.
