🎖️ My Thoughts on The Descendants 🎖️

Legacy of Honor: The Descendants is a compelling and deeply human conclusion to Larry A. Freeland’s intergenerational trilogy. Told through the lives of three brothers—Alan, Lee, and Scott McCormick—this novel captures the raw emotional toll of war and the enduring strength of family legacy.

From the perilous jungles of Vietnam to high-stakes helicopter missions and covert CIA operations, each brother’s journey is unique, but all are united by sacrifice, valor, and a powerful sense of duty. Freeland brings military history to life with precise detail and emotional clarity, drawing from real-life experience to paint scenes that feel both cinematic and heartbreakingly intimate.

What makes this story stand out is how it balances action with heart. These aren’t just soldiers; they’re sons, brothers, and patriots wrestling with the cost of service. The pacing is tight, the transitions between storylines seamless, and the writing consistently grounded in both realism and compassion.

Readers who are fans of historical fiction, military memoirs, or family sagas will find The Descendants to be a must-read. It’s also an ideal choice for anyone interested in the personal side of 20th-century warfare—how it shapes lives not just on the battlefield, but back home as well.

With this final chapter, Freeland solidifies the Legacy of Honor series as a heartfelt tribute to America's warriors and the families that stand behind them.

I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review represents my honest and unbiased opinion.

“Legacy, honor, and the burdens passed from father to son—this is a tribute to every family shaped by war.”

Writing Historical Fiction: Overview

By Larry A Freeland

Writing historical fiction is like embarking on a time-travel adventure, guiding readers through the corridors of the past with stories that breathe life into long-gone eras. Demands rigorous approach to research, character development, and plot crafting. We must ensure that the characters, setting, and plot are in line with the historical period while weaving compelling fictional narratives.

Key Takeaways:

  • Research deeply to make your historical fiction feel real.
  • Take notes while researching and writing. Set up files on our computer—sub-label them research items, e.g. historical date highlights, historical figures-quotes, physical characteristics/unique mannerism/traits, successes, failures: major events: period clothing, customs, common phrases and words.
  • Mix true history with made–up stories carefully. Your book should teach readers about the past but also entertain them.

Always Research:

For me, researching is like gathering pieces for a puzzle. I look everywhere—museums for artifacts, libraries for records, expert interviews and visits to historical sites to fill in gaps. My goal is always clear: ensure every piece fits perfectly within my fictional world while maintaining historical accuracy.

Strike a balance between history and fiction:

It’s essential to intertwine accurate historical facts with compelling fictional elements. Crafting historical fiction involves blending fact and fiction seamlessly that captures the essence of a specific era and hopefully creates an immersive reading experience sought after by your readers.

Develop complex and engaging characters:

Crafting characters with emotions, desires, flaws, and strengths tailored towards your historical context underpins the essence of this genre. Not only does it make history relatable but also enhances the overall reading experience.

Create a rich and historically accurate setting:

Infuse authentic details such as clothing, architecture, and daily life activities to transport readers back in time to experience the setting firsthand. Engage with primary sources like letters, diaries, or photographs from the era you are writing about.

Build a strong plot:

Build tension and conflict into your story. Characters’ actions and decisions should be shaped by the period’s social norms and challenges, creating an authentic experience for readers.

Useful research tips:

When looking for inspiration and information, these tips can guide you through the process of researching to write your historical fiction story:

  1. Primary sources like diaries, letters, and newspapers to gain firsthand perspectives from the time period.
  2. Engage with experts in history or specific time periods.
  3. Utilize historical databases and archives to access authentic documents and records from the past.
  4. Immerse yourself in historical places and artifacts to capture the essence of the era.
  5. Visit historical societies for additional insights and details about your chosen time period.
  6. Delve into scholarly articles and books.
  7. Consider attending historical reenactments to visually experience the setting of your story and visiting museums to view artifacts from the period.
  8. Use Google maps and drill down to the actual sites and do a visual tour to get a feel for the land, topography, street and city layouts and main buildings/iconic sites.

Lastly, draw on your own personal experiences and those of family members and friends if you and or they have lived the event or during the time period you’ve chosen to write your story about.
