Not all fires are welcoming.
After decades of war, this had never been more true for the neighboring kingdoms of Tristren and Zemotze. Locked in a tense armistice, there was a promise of a treaty in the air. However, as the Blademage Volgare flees from his enemies, he can see through the wall of deception that clouds the land.
Meanwhile, in the bustling city of Brigandee, the shadow of the weapon known as the Tragik has crept in closer than comfortable. The young man named Hinro Ga

Was this the cause of my…surge of strength?
The sound of the gate swinging open at the front of the yard made his heart jump. He dropped the axe to the ground, turning in a sudden rush of excitement. The thought of his anger vanished from his mind before he could even further entertain why he had felt it to begin with.
As the gate closed, the sturdy figure of Hinro’s father, Dritz, stood, smiling widely as Amy rushed into his arms. Hinro too began to run over, embracing his father for the first time in months. He looked into the mirrored version of himself, only with a darker, wiser face. It was stubbly with the long beginnings of a beard, and the darker browns of his father’s hair seemed stained and dirty. Equipped in a breastplate and cloak, a sword and shield hung at his back, the masked, horned helmet that they had always known at his belt side. A cape with a hood draped behind, a satchel with various travel items with a curiously long package lay on the ground.
He greeted them both fondly, having longed to embrace his children once again. But, as he examined Hinro more closely, he noticed the wounds – they were minor, but noticeable nonetheless, bandages showing from underneath the shadow of his cloak.
Looking upwards, the finger of his father was rough upon Hinro’s chin. His deep eyes gave him an investigating look. “It would appear you have been busier in battle at home than I have been away.”
Arms retreating, Hinro lowered his head. “Nothing of importance and that you need to worry yourself over. I am more interested in hearing about the news from the north.”
Dritz nodded, the smile and joy of seeing his children once again clear upon his face. A missing tooth showed, and the joy was burdened as it surfaced upon his face. “Come, let us go inside. I will tell you all I can. I long to taste your mother’s sweet kiss, as well as her cooking!”

Art and Adventure: 3 Favorite Things
Chad L.E McGhie
When people think of art, most people think of fancy museums with elegant paintings, roped-off barriers, and a general sense of stillness that comes with its appreciation. As time and humanity have evolved, however, so has the art we have created, and today’s modern world is blessed with an abundance of content that is waiting for them at their fingertips. Music, books, movies, games, and countless more forms of media dance around the internet and radio waves, parading in a wave of endless entertainment.
As a fantasy writer, I tend to celebrate anything that has an imaginative world, mysterious magic, or complex characters and creatures. Some of my favorite works are heralded classics, of course, but there is a vast amount of undiscovered brilliance that is out there that often leaves audiences with some great treasures. Escapism is a delicacy for many and one that fantasy and science fiction provides plenty of.
Here are some of my favorite works, their runner-ups, and why.
Favorite Film: Lord of the Rings Series – Tolkien was not only the man, but he was the man who is largely responsible for the world’s ongoing obsession with fantasy. Peter Jackson’s adaptation of the work is religiously true to its source material, albeit with some liberties (Tom Bombadill’s entire omission is almost unforgivable), but the rest of the trilogy is an emotional, action-packed adventure that still holds cinematic spectacle to this day.
It is difficult to choose a favorite scene or actor, as every person and frame holds a magical tone that has been difficult to duplicate since, and the roles that each actor took has been imprinted onto their careers for life. The Hobbit films that came after are an extension of the great work in which Peter Jackson founded, and do the novel true justice.
Runner-Up: 8-Mile: Flipping the script completely, the other half of my creativity came alive whenever I saw Eminem’s biographical drama on-screen. My friends and I started ‘rap battling’ each other in the form of passing notes to one another, until I eventually found Rapbattles.com and introduced myself to the hip-hop and rap community as a whole. The final battle in the film still gives me chills, as it is some of the best lyricism that has been put to a soundtrack.
Favorite Video Game: Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Nintendo 64 – This was a difficult choice, as so many could claim this title. I was blessed to be a child in the 90’s, however, and it was a decade that was not only gifted with numerous advances in gaming technology and storytelling, it birthed some of the most revolutionary and legendary video games ever made. Ocarina of Time is at the top of many people’s list, for good reason: it set the bar for what 3D adventure and role playing games would become.
Super Mario 64 has a had a similar impact on the platform genre, and Nintendo’s dominance and popularity is not going to slow down anytime soon with the momentum of the Switch, and the Super Mario Brothers movie.
Runner-Up: Final Fantasy VII, Playstation – Make no mistake – Final Fantasy VII is a legendary and revolutionary title in its own right. It is, in my opinion, one of the best stories ever told on any medium. Its popularity has spawned numerous spin-offs, sequels, and remakes, its overall longevity is only proof of its lasting legacy. Final Fantasy Tactics easily took up more of my time as a child, but the story of Cloud Strife set up for a lifetime of intrigue.
Favorite Book: The Prince of Nothing Trilogy – Many might assume that Tolkien would take the top spot here, considering my previous responses, but R Scott Bakker’s trilogy not only evolves the Tolkien formula, the reality and realism that is realized within the pages is unparalleled. Barbaric and brutal, dark and disgusting, the evil within these pages feels real on a level that I have yet to encounter again.
The people within the pages feel close to you, as if you could know them as well as your relatives. They are flawed, far from heroic, and the emotion displayed is raw. Inspiring, engrossing, and genre-pushing, Bakker’s word is an absolute must for any lover of high, Tolkienesque fantasy.
Runner-Up: Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit and Harry Potter – It was a first for millions, including me, and I was blessed to read The Hobbit in grade school. Easily, the most important work in my mind, although I feel the genre has evolved.
Harry Potter is such an evolution, as few pages had me reading a novel in one sitting the way Harry’s story did. This is but a fragment of a fragment of the numerous works, stories, and creative ideas that have inspired me. It would be impossible to cover all of my favorites from every genre. Whatever artwork you find joy in, let the joy flow freely.

It seems to me that while a lot of you are responding to these blogs, a lot of them seem to be copy and pasted, and/or generated by an algorithm.
