After Lord Michael inadvertently insults Antigone, a gentleman scholar’s daughter, a heavy dislike is born on her side. For his part, Michael is inelegant at expressing or understanding his sudden attraction to Antigone, and uses private poetry to articulate his confused feelings for her. Soon Antigone begins receiving mysterious poems from another suitor unbeknownst to Michael. When she accepts a proposal from this suitor, Michael leaves on a diplomatic mission, despairing of ever acting on his conflicted feelings for her.

Michael returns several years later, surprised to find a still unwed Antigone visiting his family estate. After an incident where Antigone accidentally stumbles upon Michael bathing in a lake, she begins to see him in a different light and breaks her engagement to another. Their intense connection takes an unexpected turn when it appears that Michael schemed to entrap her but all is not what it seems.

📜 Excerpt from Letters Take the Lady

In this exclusive scene, Anna Valleria gives us a glimpse into the moment when Antigone “Annie” Sprague’s heart begins to stir in unexpected ways. What starts as curiosity over a suitor’s poetic letters soon deepens into something far more intimate—desire, confusion, and the thrilling realization that love may demand more honesty than she’s ever known.

Just as Annie began to ponder what this meant for her life, she received another letter. As she read over it hungrily, one line stood out to her:

I can never say to you how much I want my hands on you and yours on me.

This poem felt different, full of longing and something heavier and darker that she couldn’t name. It was certainly inappropriate, almost coarse, yet these poems had always felt far too intimate for propriety. She shuddered as she reread those lines again, and she recognized what the words were full of: desire. And she realized, perhaps for the first time, that she deeply wanted passion with a future husband. She hadn’t felt any sort of spark like this when she had danced with Sir Trevathan, but this letter and its words nearly consumed her.

There was also a bitterness there, a frustrated yearning. Was this what he was holding back? Sir Trevathan, or Sir Ambrose as she called him in her head, always seemed like he had something more going on behind his eyes, but Annie could never have guessed at the wells of longing that lurked in his soul.

She absentmindedly put her hand to her chest as if to calm her pounding heart. She had never felt this sensation before. She had been rather silly over one or two of her father’s friends, yes. Had even stolen a kiss here or there. But she hadn’t been deeply moved by any of them. Not in this way. How could she express to Sir Ambrose that she felt the same way when he seemed determined never to speak of the letters? How could she show him?

Kiss him, a voice in her head told her. That was why kisses existed wasn’t it?

As the letters grow bolder, so does Annie’s awakening—challenging her notions of love, propriety, and passion. Letters Take the Lady beautifully captures that fragile space between restraint and revelation, reminding us that sometimes the truest confessions are written long before they’re ever spoken aloud.

  1. I’m Anna Valleria, excited to be visiting today! Thank you to the host and Goddess Fish Promotions.
My historical romance, Letters Take the Lady, is an enemies-to-lovers story where the hero is secretly obsessed with the heroine, and the heroine has already fallen for his words but thinks they came from the wrong man. It's an intense, (sort of) second-chance romance.
What trope has you immediately picking up a book? And on the flip side, are there any tropes you stay clear of?
