After devoting half of his lifetime transforming his start-up business into a multi-million dollar industry leader, author John McLaughlin set out in a new direction: to teach what he had learned to others.Due to a lack of teaching experience, his only job offer was to teach entrepreneurship to prisoners at a minimum-security camp in North Carolina. John gradually builds an effective program until a scandal involving prison officials blindsides his progress and threatens to bring his teaching career to an unceremonious end.
Lifeline to a Soul takes the reader inside the fence and chronicles the victories and challenges one man faced as a first-time teacher in the strange world of prison life.

My Venture to an Unexpected Place
Like most people, I never planned to spend time inside a prison. I wanted to teach though, and
teaching in a prison was the only position offered to me during an unproductive seven-year job
search, so I did. I never planned to write a memoir either. COVID-19 took away all my
extracurricular activities though and unexpectedly provided me with the time I needed to write,
so I did that too.
The most unexpected event of all, though was what happened during the memoir writing process.
I thought I would be writing about my experience teaching entrepreneurship in a minimum-
security prison, but it became so much more than that.
I sent an early manuscript to my first editor who sent back a copy with a big “WHOA!” written
in red ink next to the part where I first mentioned my wife. “You can’t introduce her like that,
we need to know how you met, why you married her, etc.” I had never really thought about why I married my wife, it just sort of happened.
The memoir forced me to write about my childhood and the values that were instilled in me by
people who cared about me and my future. These values played a huge role in my life and made
me the person I am today. Before writing about it, I had never put all those pieces together.
The writing experience caused me to re-live big life events that had altered the course of my
history and remember relationships that were long ago forgotten. Most importantly, this
experience provided an opportunity to view previous life events through a different lens, a view
that included forgiveness of past transgressions, including my own, and above all healing of old
wounds.
Writing a memoir is a lot like running your first marathon. It’s an experience not to be taken
lightly. You can spend a lot of time planning and preparing, but you don’t really know what the
experience is going to be like until race day when you take your first step.
So, what are you waiting for? We all have a story to tell. Even if your story never sees the light
of day, the experience will provide you with a perspective of yourself that is impossible to view
any other way.
