May 2018 Reading List

My May 2018 reading list is perhaps a little shorter than usual. It has been a crazy busy month with promotions, graduations, aging parent issues, etc. That isn’t to say I haven’t been reading. Books are such an important part of my daily life. Giving them up would be like telling me to quit breathing. I also kept my reading a little on the lighter side this month as I needed it more for an escape from daily pressures.

Reading is essential to my mental health.

As always, I read most of my books on my iPad using the Kindle App and my Kindle Unlimited subscription. Most of the May 2018 reading list choices I purchased and a couple are advanced reader copies I was sent to review before they were released to the public. There are more links, images, and synopses below the bullet list. I hope you read on to see if any of this month’s selections appeal to you. Please leave a comment here or on my Facebook Page.

517vkS3sugL. SL110ir?t=wwwginamitche 20&l=li1&o=1&a=1980880794   The Sinking of Bethany Ann Crane, K. Kris Loomis

A country on the cusp of war. A town suspended in time.

One girl’s desperate attempt to escape her eternal childhood. Bethany Ann Crane is a motherless eight-year-old living in Grover Springs, SC at the beginning of the Cold War.
After her patriotic small town agrees to enter into a government experiment geared to give the Americans an edge over the Russians in space, she, along with the rest of the town, is preserved in a scientific stasis state and Bethany Ann becomes ensnared in her pre-adolescent body.
As the girl matures mentally, she experiences more grown-up emotions and aspirations, but her family and neighbors refuse to recognize her as anything but a child.
Will her only friend be able to save her? Will Bethany Ann ever be allowed to “come of age?”
The Sinking of Bethany Ann Crane is the gripping story of one girl’s yearning for adulthood in a world where time stands still.

This book is simply amazing. I have read it twice & honestly, I think about the concepts and characters every day!

Steve, her childhood sweetheart, shows up on her doorstep as though no time has passed. And she continually runs into Jackson, a man she wishes she never had to see again. Jackson is a changed man–if only he could get Jenna to see it. He is still nursing a crush, but she makes it abundantly clear that she still thinks of him as the bad boy he was in high school. Will Jackson be able to show her the man he has become and tell her how he feels? Or will Jenna fall right back into her old patterns with Steve?

Look for full reviews of the above two books on the blog soon.

Marnie MacGraw wants an ordinary life—a husband, kids, and a minivan in the suburbs. Now that she’s marrying the man of her dreams, she’s sure this is the life she’ll get. Then Marnie meets Blix Holliday, her fiancé’s irascible matchmaking great-aunt who’s dying, and everything changes—just as Blix told her it would. When her marriage ends after two miserable weeks, Marnie is understandably shocked. She’s even more astonished to find that she’s inherited Blix’s Brooklyn brownstone along with all of Blix’s unfinished “projects”: the heartbroken, oddball friends and neighbors running from happiness. Marnie doesn’t believe she’s anything special, but Blix somehow knew she was the perfect person to follow in her matchmaker footsteps. And Blix was also right about some things Marnie must learn the hard way: love is hard to recognize, and the ones who push love away often are the ones who need it most.

I am catching up on new books in the Witch P.I series.

This is a light-hearted cozy mystery series in which Winky the one-eyed cat tries to steal the show. I highly recommend reading this series in order for it to make sense. (Suitable for teens, seniors and all ages in-between)

51hL7yka4kL. SL110ir?t=wwwginamitche 20&l=li1&o=1&a=B0127HPQ48  Witch is When it All Began (A Witch P.I. mystery) #1 by Adele Abbott

What would you do if you discovered you were a witch?
That’s exactly what happens to Private investigator, Jill Gooder. And as if that wasn’t enough, she has a serial killer to catch. More magic, mystery and laughs than you can shake a stick at.

Newest releases

51qomDryh+L. SL110ir?t=wwwginamitche 20&l=li1&o=1&a=198208622X  Witch is Why it was Over (A Witch P.I. mystery) #24,  Adele Abbott

There are no more secrets. The truth is out there for everyone to see. And now, Jill has to make the most important decision of her life. Don’t count your chickens… count your custard creams instead.

ir?t=wwwginamitche 20&l=li1&o=1&a=1984075926  Witch is How Things had Changed (A Witch P.I. Mystery) #25,  Adele Abbott

All work and no play … leaves no time for custard creams.

Life is now very different for Jill Gooder, P.I. and witch extraordinaire. But some things never change – Winky for example.

New releases from the Ghosts of Culloden Moor series. Read about Highlanders 1-39 on this post.

41VZ0tCCvBL. SL110ir?t=wwwginamitche 20&l=li1&o=1&a=B07D658SSL  The Blacksmith, Ghosts of Culloden Moor #38, L.L. Muir

This is The Blacksmith you’ve been looking for…Risen from the dead, Kerry Mather has little time to perform a miracle. He’s got to teach an American photographer that staying detached is the same as staying lonely. He only hopes that touching her heart won’t break it… when he has to move on.
Jordan Lennox is a photographer in love with Scotland, yet a mystery man in a kilt convinces her she’s blind to the true nature of the country. She hates to lead him along, but she’s only got two days to save her career, and she’s pretty sure the perfect shot of a Highlander is the miracle she needs to impress the new boss.
The problem is, she’s got to keep him close–but not too close…

*THE BLACKSMITH is #38 in the series. If you are new to the ghosts, first read the short set up, The Gathering, to avoid confusion. The Blacksmith was released a little late due to the author having an accident. Therefore, I read it out of order, which makes absolutely NO difference.

It is an excellent addition to the series.

41Mmn8krr0L. SL110ir?t=wwwginamitche 20&l=li1&o=1&a=B07CJQFNRR  MacNabb, Ghosts of Culloden Moor #41 , Diane Darcy

When a man without a soul meets a woman who is all heart…
He trusts no one. When Ewan MacNabb’s protective amulet is stolen off his dying body, it’s the final betrayal. He curses the object, then, much to his satisfaction, dreams of the blasted thing and the harm it does others throughout the centuries. All well and good until he starts to dream of her.
She’s too trusting! Raised in Roswell, and with a grandfather who once saw an alien, Luna Brazel is a believer! Still, she hadn’t expected one to drop out of the sky and demand the amulet she’d scored at a garage-sale! Especially the guy she’d been dreaming of for weeks.

A deal to help each other is quickly struck and, yard sales, quirky library patrons, and family might be exactly what Ewan needs to come back to life. When Luna is attacked by others seeking to obtain the amulet, he’ll shut that down fast! No one touches what’s his and, for now anyway, she belongs to him.
Despite their mutual attraction, she wonders if he’ll return to his home planet and leave her behind? His only question, can she possibly love a ghost?

This month’s favorite children’s books.

51zaiah6t7L. SL110ir?t=wwwginamitche 20&l=li1&o=1&a=1846104858Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, Kate Toms (Children’s Board Book)

A beautiful new picture book with hand-stitched collage illustrations. Based on the rhyme, it tells the charming story of a mouse dreaming about the stars; he dreams of catching a twinkling star in his net, and keeping it as a pet; he dreams of flying off on a rocket, and gathering stardust in his pocket. The pictures and rhyming text work together, resulting in a delightful book for parents or grandparents and children to share. I read this to my 2-year old grandson over skype and it was a hit.

518YilIcw L. SL110ir?t=wwwginamitche 20&l=li1&o=1&a=0061953385  Extra Yarn by Mac Barnett, Illustrated by Jon Klassen

From bestselling and award-winning author Mac Barnett and illustrator Jon Klassen comes Extra Yarn, a Caldecott Honor Book, Boston Globe-Horn Book Award winner, and a New York Times bestseller.
A young girl and her box of magical yarn transform a community in this stunning picture book. With spare, gently humorous illustrations and a palette that moves from black-and-white to a range of color, this modern fairy tale has the feel of a new classic. Children of all ages including the young at heart will love this book.
