Format: eBook, Hardcover, Paperback

Would-be movie producer Emily Bennett didn't believe the legend of a lost movie, starring James Dean and John Wayne. But when she meets two uncannily talented celebrity impersonators-Jimmy Riley and Tom "Duke" Manfredo, and stumbles upon the elusive film editor who stole the master negative of Showdown, it dispels her doubts, fills her with a courage she didn't know she had, and she sets out to complete the movie.
But as Emily and her stars prepare for day one of shooting, they find themselves entangled in a complex love triangle with Oedipal undertones, mirroring their own past lives and off-screen dynamics. As doubts about their ruthless director, Solange Borugian, surface, Jimmy's and Duke's friendship is turned upside down, while Emily and her brother Ben, struggle with their own unresolved issues and are forced to confront their dying father.
On location in Arizona, amidst Apache holy grounds and the magic of day-for-night shooting, the lines between past and present blur and the flawed characters' backstories intertwine into a tumultuous finale that exposes their hidden animosities, demons, and loves.

My thoughts on Mit Out Sound
This novel isn’t just about resurrecting an old Hollywood legend—it’s about confronting the ghosts of the past, both literal and metaphorical. The characters are messy, flawed, and tangled in relationships that are equal parts love, resentment, and unresolved history. Emily’s determination to finish Showdown starts as a career move, but it quickly becomes something deeper—a journey into a past that refuses to stay buried. Jimmy and Duke aren’t just playing legends; they’re living echoes of something bigger, and the weight of that starts to crack their friendship.
What really struck me was how seamlessly the book blends mystery, Hollywood nostalgia, and raw human emotion. The story isn’t just about making a movie—it’s about making peace with the past. Emily and her brother Ben are forced to confront their father’s impending death, and their struggle to reconnect feels just as high-stakes as the film itself. Meanwhile, Jimmy and Duke’s bond is tested in ways that go beyond the usual Hollywood egos. And Solange, their ruthless director? Let’s just say she’s got her own motives, and trusting her might be the biggest gamble of all.
The tension builds like a perfectly paced film, leading to an ending that feels both inevitable and surprising. Some stories—on and off the screen—never really end, and Mit Out Sound captures that beautifully. If you love old Hollywood mysteries, complex character drama, and stories about redemption, this one is absolutely worth your time.
I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

Guest Post from the author of Mit Out Sound
Can you tell us a little about your life as an author?
Whisper
Outside of the regular things of life: family, eating, sleeping, reading, and playing, I write whenever I have spare time—in doctors’ offices, waiting in the car, or if I’m going through a bout of insomnia. You know the old advice to would-be writers? Don’t write until you have something to write about. I waited too long. I’m trying to make up for lost time. Doing that is not a ritual with me, it’s a tenacity I have to nurture—not as any kind of virtue, but as a bitter medicine I’ve come to be oddly fond of … addicted to, if I’m honest.
I wrote plays for most of my life. I earned very little money doing it. Almost all my income came from working as an actor. Some of the lessons I learned doing that turned out to be useful when I transitioned from my dilettantish playwriting to trying to write novels like a professional. That meant working, as nearly as possible, full time—memorizing lines till I knew them backwards, then doing improv work so that my lines didn’t seem memorized.
The most important thing I can do, more than any writing ritual or editing technique, is to keep my work schedule open-ended. “We never close.” If my muse happens by, plonking her lyre, seducing me with her magic, I’ve got to grab her before she gets her feelings hurt and wanders off to pass her goodies on to some other needy ink slinger. Whisper—that’s my muse’s name—is petulant and unpredictable. I didn’t name her, by the way, she did. She likes to perceive herself as subtle and oh-so artful. If they’d asked me to name her, I’d have called her Shout.
Still, as I got to know her, I realized she had a lot to offer me, but only if I was willing to practice my craft entirely on her terms. I understand that every writer has a different way of working. It doesn’t serve me to decide exactly when to sit down at the computer, what to eat before or after writing. My love life—which my children (three) don’t like believing I have ever had any of (more than the three times) has nothing to do with my writing schedule. I can’t impose a pre-set quitting time on myself; I don’t want to pinch off the flow when things are going well.
I remember the advice of a John Irving character, Coach Bob, in The Hotel New Hampshire, who said, “Get obsessed and stay obsessed.”
Apparently I have no choice. There is nothing I won’t put down when Whisper shows up and shouts at me. As I say, she only does that when she feels like it—but when she does appear, when she’s summoned the urge to help me out, I have no choice but to follow her like a baby duckling.
Rick Lenz was an actor for many years, working in regional and New York theatre. He repeated his Broadway role of Igor Sullivan in the movie version of Cactus Flower, opposite Goldie Hawn, Ingrid Bergman and Walter Matthau. Other films include Melvin and Howard and The Shootist. For many years he shuttled between playwriting (regional theatre, Off-Broadway, and PBS) and film and television acting jobs. He was Police Chief Oliver Stamp on Hec Ramsey with Richard Boone and played a wide variety of characters in TV movies and series, including multiple appearances on Murder, She Wrote, Green Acres, and Bionic Woman.
In addition to Mit Out Sound, he is the author of three previous novels, The Alexandrite, Hello Rest of My Life, A Town Called WHY, and a memoir, North of Hollywood. Rick lives in Los Angeles with his wife Linda and an ever-shifting array of animals.
