🖋️ Guest Post from Nathalie P Suarez Moscoso

One reason I adore spotlighting children’s books is because I’ve seen firsthand how powerful they are in keeping relationships close. As a grandparent, picture books often help me stay connected with my grandchildren even when I can’t be with them — stories have a way of holding space in our hearts until we meet again.

So today’s guest post resonated strongly with me. Author Nathalie P. Suarez Moscoso reflects on how books support children through absence and change — especially in families where Mommy works long, unpredictable hours. Her insights are both empathetic and encouraging.

Let’s hear from her now.

The Power of Children's Books to Help with Mommy’s Absence

By Nathalie P. Suarez Moscoso, MD.

Complex job schedules are increasingly common and can affect family dynamics, especially when Mommy works long hours, takes weekend calls, handles night shifts, and manages unpredictable responsibilities. A parent may leave before sunrise and return long after bedtime. Unfortunately, this is the "industry standard" for healthcare workers. For young children, this unpredictability can feel confusing and sometimes a little frightening.

This is where picture books become powerful tools. Bedtime stories help children make sense of separation and foster connection after a long day. They spark conversation and offer language for feelings, even when those emotions are still too big to name.

Children use stories to understand themselves and the world. When a book reflects an experience similar to their own, the story becomes a mirror. A little one also misses their mom. Another child also has a mommy who works long hours. Another mommy and baby rejoice when they are together again. The child realizes that their emotions are shared.

Storytime also serves as an anchor in a child’s daily routine. Familiar stories read regularly create a sense of safety. Even if Mommy is not home for bedtime, the book becomes a stand-in for her presence. The child hears her voice in the words she has read before. They remember the way she turns the pages or kisses the top of their head after the last line. A predictable ritual helps their minds feel grounded.

Stories about missing our kids when we are at work can feel powerful and therapeutic for working moms. When all work accomplishments do not let us overcome the feelings of sadness that our home absence elicits, the weight of vulnerability can feel especially heavy.

For healthcare families, emotional pathways matter. Our schedules often steal the long stretches of time we wish we had with our children. We cannot always control how often we are home, but we can shape the quality of the moments we share. A picture book creates connection even during the days when absence feels heavier than usual.

When a child’s world feels uncertain, stories give them a place to rest. They help little hearts feel understood. They remind children that love continues whether Mommy is beside them or caring for others. And in that reassurance, a stronger bond begins to grow.

If you are a healthcare parent looking for tools that help your child feel safe, seen, and connected even during long shifts, explore our growing collection of resources and stories at STAT Parenting. Small moments of connection can make a lasting difference, and you deserve support on that journey.
