Excerpt from Of Love and Vengeance by Louise Lyndon

Laila swallowed hard, hoping to choke down the words which threatened to hurtle from her mouth in defense of her home. She inhaled deeply. And when she was sure she was not going to blurt the words she so desperately wanted to shout, she said simply, “Only three serfs remain, and they are hunting. They will return shortly,” she lied.

“They dare leave the Lady of the manor unprotected?”
Laila would have been deaf not to hear the derision in his voice. “Although, you hardly need protecting, do you? And your husband? Where is he? Is he hunting, too?”
“I do not have a husband.”

He nodded his head in understanding. She was unwed; a lone woman with no one to protect her. She was at his complete mercy. She knew it. He knew it.
The rasp of his strong fingers against his day-old stubble filled the silent great hall. With his mind seemingly made up, he strode toward the door. “It’s too late to do anything about it today, but be ready first thing on the morrow.”

Laila followed close on his heels. “Ready for what?”
Without missing a step, he threw over his shoulder, “Our wedding.”

My thoughts on Of Love and Vengeance by Louise Lyndon | Review

Lady Laila and Aymon captured my heart.

This story felt very true to the time of 1070. Women and children were often treated as chattel, and servants could be mistreated as well. Pillaging, rape, and murder are prevalent themes, which are not unusual in a story set in this era. Please note this content if you have issues with violence.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and read it straight through in one evening. Laila is fortunate her father raised her to be self-sufficient and taught her the skills needed to protect herself and her orphaned nephew. This upbringing certainly came in handy.

Aymon, the bastard half-brother of William the Conqueror, is haunted by the atrocities of war. He is ready to settle down with a docile wife, a few children, and live out his life in peace on the land gifted to him from his brother in payment for his service in the war.

Unfortunately, Laila is out-spoken, opinionated, and despises the Normans for the death of her father. However, sparks fly when they meet as he takes over her family lands, and they wed within hours.

Will hatred, jealousy, and misunderstandings rule their marriage? Can they both overcome their prejudices and past to reach for happiness? Please pick up a copy today. If medieval historical fiction is your genre, you will love this book.

My only slight issue, was the use of a few terms that seemed a bit more modern than the time period of this book. But…the story was so intense and intriguing, this did not take away from my enjoyment in the least. I still rate it 5 of 5 stars and can’t wait to read the next book in the series. Many of the characters would make excellent leads in a story of their own.
