Guest Post by Anne E. Beall, Author of Only Prince Charming Gets to Break the Rules
In fairy tales, male characters are often depicted as rule-breakers who are rewarded, but there are a few stories where female characters also break the rules and benefit greatly. One such story is “Molly Whuppie,” an English fairy tale.
The story follows Molly and her two sisters, who were abandoned in the woods by their parents because of a lack of food. The girls stumbled upon a house occupied by a giant and his wife, and after begging for food, the giant’s wife took pity on them. She fed them and then put them to bed with her own three daughters. However, Molly realized the danger of their situation when the giant returned home and placed ropes around their necks while they slept.
Molly transferred the ropes to the giant’s own daughters’ necks and saved their lives. The girls then ran out of the giant’s house and reached a palace, where Molly told her story to the king. Impressed, the king promised to marry her eldest sister to his eldest son if she could steal the giant’s sword from his bedroom. Molly went back to the giant’s house, crept under his bed, and stole the sword while he slept. Her sister married the eldest prince.
The king then promised to wed her second sister to his second son if she could steal the giant’s purse, which she also did successfully. Finally, the king promised to marry Molly to his youngest son if she could take the giant’s ring from his hand. Although the giant caught her, Molly escaped by tricking him. She returned to the king’s palace with the ring, thus earning her own marriage to the prince.
Molly’s bravery, cleverness, and rule-breaking ultimately led to her family’s prosperity and safety. By saving her sisters and bringing wealth to her family, “Molly Whuppie” showcases that defiance of rules can sometimes be rewarded for female characters.
