How can a single glacier grow dramatically while hundreds are shrinking around the world?

This paradox confronts a young glaciologist Kate Landry as she looks down at her research site buried under shocking mounds of new snow. Little does she know that Mount Olympus is in the bulls-eye for a sophisticated geoengineering experiment being conducted by a scientist who has convinced a secretive international oil cartel to fund his dubious climate modification techniques.

While Kate struggles to understand why the glacier is growing and begins to unravel the entire nefarious scheme, she also struggles to avoid the unraveling of her developing relationship with social psychologist Grant Poole. The more Kate uncovers on the glacier, the more her own life is at risk.

Can she expose the unethical and dangerous geoengineering operation without being caught before she’s stopped? And at what risk to her life?

My Thoughts on Panic Peak

Book Review: Panic Peak by William A. Liggett

Right from the start of Panic Peak, I was hooked. The concept of a single glacier expanding while others are vanishing worldwide immediately caught my curiosity. William A. Liggett does an incredible job of setting up an environmental mystery that feels both timely and eerily plausible.

The story follows Kate Landry, a glaciologist who stumbles upon something much more significant than her research—a geoengineering scheme funded by an international oil cartel. From there, the stakes only get higher, both for Kate’s life and for the planet. Liggett pulls no punches when it comes to showing just how catastrophic these manipulations could be, and that tension kept me turning pages well into the night.

I most appreciated how Panic Peak is more than just a thriller. Kate’s personal journey, her relationship with Grant Poole, and the ethical questions raised about geoengineering make it a much deeper read. Liggett weaves science into the story in a way that’s accessible but never feels preachy. The balance between action and introspection was perfect for me.

That said, there were a few moments where I wished the story had explored the geoengineering technology even more—some of the science felt a little rushed. However, this didn’t diminish the story’s impact at all. It just sent me searching for more information, which is always good. Knowledge is power, so they say.

Panic Peak is an exciting, thoughtful, and relevant novel. If you love a gripping thriller with real-world implications, this book will make you think long after turning the last page.

Guest Post from William Liggett, author of Panic Peak

Much of Climate Fiction is Dystopian and Dark. Yours is More Hopeful. Why?

I like to think of my characters as having the resources and strength to match the forces of nature and climate that are actually confronting us in the real world almost daily. I don’t need to make up threats and disasters. The twist in Panic Peak is that climate change is being compounded by additional human influence so my protagonist, Kate, is astounded and forced to unravel the unexpected weather conditions she encounters.

Kate’s being alone on Blue Glacier, trying to understand the unusual conditions, makes Grant’s life almost intolerable. He can’t stop worrying about the risks that her quest exposes her to.

These are the struggles of two adults living with uncertainty that climate change presents in their early and still-tender relationship. Whereas they had to overcome challenges in my first novel, Watermelon Snow, which were caused by a violent storm and a mysterious deadly illness. Panic Peak adds new characters to the mix—the antihero, the spy, and the villain.

I have always enjoyed making up stories. I wrote page after page that I read to my parents and classmates when I was in school and would entertain my little sister with make believe tales when we were young. Later, I dreamed of retreating to a rustic cabin in the woods while writing my novel.

Now my writing has a new purpose. Yes, I want it to entertain and to enjoy the creative process. But my characters have an important role to play—to demonstrate how the climate crisis is not insurmountable. They show courage, determination. They use every ounce of knowledge and skill they have to deal with the situation they find themselves in.

So, my intent is to instill hope in the face of climate and human-caused uncertainty. Kate and Grant are fictional, but climate fiction can show what is possible. To that end, I have done extensive research to ensure that the story has credibility. I hope that you, my readers, finish Panic Peak both more informed and more hopeful.

Panic Peak sounds like a sit on the edge of your chair novel! It will be the first Cli-Fi book that I have had the opportunity to read.
